Was awaken a few minutes ago to a crunch!....seems the local cops had been chasing a little white truck & lost track of it.... the crunch was the truck sliding between my car & our new aluminum fence... cops drove by & didn't see the truck.... I got out to the fence to notice the 2 cops a half a block down when the truck (no lights) slid back out (taking more of the front fender) & back up the street.I yelled (probably WTF) cops left... I called 911, neighbor came over. cops came back. Neighbor told them he had seen what happened, cops take my ID's, loose my license, (gosh, maybe not a good idea to place on a sloping car hood!) 10 mins to find the lost id...tell me to get a report from Hilo in a few days (gee, I now do not have a car in one piece - my luck, will get a ticket if I drive it!)...
By this time The cop had told me multiple times they were chasing this guy & lost him, that he just placed the ID right on my hood, they were chasing the truck but didn't get a license or vehicle description....and now I am looking around, picking up pieces of my car trying to find my ID... & not really pleased with the police...
fence & car damaged
Cops chased a truck into my car
I asked if he had taken a statement from the neighbor...his response was "Should I?" (no, really, the neighbor SAW what happened.... maybe that might have some thing of value...)
cop FINALLY goes to the neighbor... after I reminded him that I would not be asking this if THEY HAD ID'd the truck they were chasing, & hadn't chased it into my car & fence....
found ID
Dog slept through the whole thing....

Carey,
I go into Hilo every weekday morning, at least until winter break. I have to be in my classroom by 7, but sometimes go in earlier. Let me know if I can give you a ride into town. Coming home is much more variable, so I would be a bad person to rely on for a ride home, unless you are super flexible.

Carey, so sorry you went through this. Please make sure you follow up and get a copy of the report, and file your own version of this with the HCPD rank in Hilo (most reports lack some factual info). I hope you got names and badge numbers, too. This happens too often, especially in Puna.
Maybe writing your experience last night in a manner which requests a response (not one that is screaming mad, like you should/must be), the Chief and "training" division rank will respond. Not only to your concerns in writing, but deal with the officers. It will also go in their personnel file.
Too many rookies, not enough training, lack of basic protocol, and old timers who just put in their time (numb to their job already). Ugh! jmo.
csgray, you are truly wonderful!

So sorry to hear this! Not to belittle your experience, but a few months ago I read an article where a woman described hearing similar sounds outside and when she went outside to investigate she was gunned down by 2 police officers who were scared she was the suspect they were chasing - so glad this wasn't the case with you. I hope your insurance company cooperates with you and that you get some kind of closure as well!
Cheers

Oh man, another stoopid thing. I hope you have insurance to cover the damage done to your property. I am sending you good vibes for a more pleasant day today. Love you. [:X]

Well, called the Insurance & they want a police report...called the police...it takes Diza (the only one who processes the reports!) 10 days to 2 weeks to PROCESS the report! and then you have to pay for the copy of the report...so if there are any lack or information on this report, I will not even know until Christmas! (gosh...2 weeks is just before Christmas weekend, my bet is it will take longer than shorter.... any one want to take the odds on that bet?)
L - yup - but the sturdy aluminum was unscathed (well, there is a minor slide mark), however the concrete block base was chipped...gotta get tougher concrete here!
Carol, thank you for the offer, well, do not need to go to the police Dept for a couple of weeks...and we are on the bus line...so...
Not mad so much as in a fog of WTF, they chase a vehicle & have no ID or way of getting an ID (my bet here is that the marked cars probably have video surveillance...after all, it is the 21st cent!) the officer who chased the car has to be conjoled into getting a report from the neighbor!
Ah well, the sun is up, the mountain is clear....no one got hurt, & dog slept well last night....anyone want a not-so-guard dog??? (Ok i'm just kidding on that...but still...she slept the whole night....not even worth the kibble costs for watch dog-ness!)
Added: In the nice bright morning sun, the marks of where the truck was going into the fence, was bounced off that nice new tough fence, post & gate show up...unfortunately that is where it bounced into the car....perp must have a bit of damage to the drivers side & passengers - drivers side bouncing off of a very reinforced concrete block wall & very sturdy Aluminum fence (thank you Tyson Angel for the awesome construction!) & the passengers side from bouncing into my little silver car.... If the wall & fence had not been put in this year, most likely our guest ohana would have been hit...so this is a good thing...in a very odd world....

Geeze! What a mess. Terrible that this happened!
I'm so sorry to say I was glad to hear that I'm not the only one to have experienced this part:
Quoted: I asked if he had taken a statement from the neighbor...his response was "Should I?"
I thought there must be something about the way I look, or behave, or speak, or where I live, or something about me to have elicited that kind of response from the 'authorities'.

LOL. I'm surprised they didn't ask you for a contribution for the policeman's ball after the escapade. LOLOLO
Edited to say I am not laughing at your misfortune but at the bungling of the Keystone cops ineptitude.
Edited a second time to say: Read Carey's account once more and broke out laughing afresh. Had one more after thought: "At least the cops didn't shoot your dog." LOLOLOLO.
