Of the three choices presented to the Governor, this is likely the best. In any case, Schatz has to stand for election in two years. Colleen Hanabusa has not particularly distinguished herself as a Congresswoman, and the other selection, whose name I cannot recall at the moment, was from a mid-level bureaucratic position. I truly believe Senator Inouye was a hero, a great patriot, and a distinguished public servant. His opposition to the Vietnam War and his Watergate investigative action were hallmarks of the era. In later years, however, I believe he came to take his role as kingmaker in Hawaii politics to a heavy-handed and unseemly extreme. "Let Uncle Dan decide who is best to represent you" didn't work for a lot of us. As for the late Senator Inouye's last wish for Hanabusa to be appointed, well, extending the kingmaker role beyond the grave was too much even for the Hawaii Democratic Party.

Voted for NDAA and Patriot Act - 'nuff said.

NDAA/Patriot are really bad examples of "must pass" legislation, I would not consider them part of anyone's voting record.

I see your point river wolf. Gandhi probably would agree, but what difference would agreeing make when you are sitting in a cell in Guantanamo...

Typical thread derailing by the usuals. The topic was about Inouye's method of getting funds for Hawaii. But since the Patriot Act has been brought up, let's go back to 9/12/01, The Day After. I vividly remember the nationwide hysteria that was going on. I also remember the week before when George Bush was being referred to as the village idiot and Donald Rumsfeld was being called Rummy, with calls for his removal as Secretary of Defense. Flash forward to 9/12/01 and George Bush and Donald Rumsfeld were suddenly The Champions of America! Seriously, are you people going to forget Freedom Fries and the Dixie Chick traitors? I remember grandmas with old Cadillacs getting two giant American flags mounted on the tails of their cars and driving up and down the street, blaring their horns. The fervor reminded me of what Nazi Germany in 1939 must have been like, anybody that disagreed wouldn't dare say anything -- out of fear. That was the environment The Patriot Act was introduced. That national hysteria went on to launch an unprovoked, pre-emptive invasion, not a first for America, but probably the most glaring example. We went on to have the wrong war in the wrong place at the wrong time for the wrong reason. That cost about $1,000,000,000,000 and ten years, all fought on credit, the credit balance dumped into the national debt, just to kill one man. Are people really going to forget Cheney saying in the early days the war would be more than paid for by the Iraqi people being able to pump their oil and paying back America for freeing them? The outcome was the Iraqi's decided not to include American oil companies to rebuild their oil fields and they don't think they owe America anything. Not only that, America went into the invasion, not fully realizing the differences between Suni and Shiites, resulting in the Shiites getting much stronger. So, we now have a global environment where unprovoked pre-emptive invasion is completely justifiable because America has said, "Do as I say, not as I do". The Patriot Act is essentially the first stages in setting up the Brave New World.

"It was a majority decision to descend into the Dark Ages.
Don't worry, be happy, bang on da drum all day!"

yep! danny voted for that brave new world and worked the street corner better than most

actually your Original Post was a link about who would be Inouye's successor - I didn't see anything about funds in that link on nbcbews, which by the way was a terrible article I don't see why you even bothered posting - not to say i'm surprised you read that drivel.

Cheers

Those who have consistently proven to derail topics as well as are incapable of expressing logical thoughts with respect to the topic should be "shot on site!"

Now rainy post some more inane babble as only the Troll in you can so perfectly do!

Inouye's importance and contributions to Hawaii as well as the Big Island will be felt very soon enough.

NDAA is voted on every year and has to be. However they did not have to vote in a provision of indefinite detention for American citizens. If we followed the Constitution this NDAA provision and the actions resulting from the patriot act would be considered treason. Remember "enemies foreign and domestic" That is what they swore to uphold and protect the Constitution from. Maybe not shot on site, but certainly voted out and most of them tried for treason. There are some politicians who chose not to vote for either, Obama used to be one of them. Its not a red team, blue team thing, they are on the same team, don't fall for the illusion of choice.
