I couldn't believe it. Isn't that very close to Green Sand Beach?

Kamilo is NE of Green Sands - and has regularly planned cleanups...

Some of the few past threads on this beach, the first with contact info to volunteer to help on a cleanup:

I have been involved with the HWF debris clean up for years. You can contact Megan Lampson to get on the email list for the Kamilo beach clean ups. they also have a HWF facebook page. Great bunch of folks.
the junk beach itself You can google Kamilo Beach to see where it is. Beachcomber's dream. I have found lots of treasures during the beach clean ups.
Great place to camp also. I take my truck down for the clean ups and also go myself once a month.
If your vehicle can't make it over the South Point ruts before and after Green Sand beach, then don't go. It is past Green Sand beach going from South Point. We go another way through gated cattle farm lands. Either way, your car should have about 10 inch clearance for the ruts and 4wd for the dust sand pockets.

so do they provide transportation for volunteers? You would think a beach needing a lifted 4WD would be cleaner than the rest of the beaches...

The stuff that ends up on that beach comes from all over the Pacific, and almost none of it comes from Hawaii. That is true of most of our beach debris, it is not Hawaii generated.

Carol. that is not quite true of the more "municipal" beaches in HI... the beach cleanup stats are available, and many of the beaches that are on clean ups, including Hilo Bay "Canoe Beach" & the Kehaka beaches, have the vast majority of the debris items locally & recreationally utilized (most common are small items - butts, bottles, fishing line & hooks & such) and Kekaha beaches have most of the large item locally generated (it always amazes me that every 6 mos we do a cleanup & there are ALWAYS major car parts in the water - things like transmissions, engines, axles & such... still have never figured if it is people doing major car work AT the beach, or bring their junk parts TO the beach... neither one makes any sense...but it must to SOMEONE!)

ADDED: Eric - usually SOME transportation is available, some from Hilo, some from closer to the turnoff ... best to contact Megan...

What is the area between South Point and Green sand beach? This last spring I hiked to the Green sand beach and there was an awful lot of debris about the half way point between the two.... LOTS of debris!!

Kamilo Bay si the poster child, however Ka`alu`alu Bay, Kai`ola Bay, and Mahana Bay (near Green Sands) all get a lot of ocean current deposited debris.
