Bananahead - I had a look at some stats for the region recently and they certainly have suffered some massive earthquakes recently. I think I might have used the phrase "not unusual" rather than "average" though!
The KHON article makes sense. When the first couple of Hawaii-specific statements went out I was very puzzled by what was in them, they didn't make sense, e.g., http://ptwc.weather.gov/ptwc/text.php?id...02.06.0119
"[...]AN EVALUATION OF THE PACIFIC WIDE TSUNAMI THREAT IS UNDERWAY AND THERE IS A POSSIBILITY THAT HAWAII COULD BE ELEVATED TO A WATCH OR WARNING STATUS."
Followed by the statement, in the same message:
"THIS WILL BE THE ONLY STATEMENT ISSUED FOR THIS EVENT UNLESS ADDITIONAL DATA ARE RECEIVED."
Sounded like they were going to leave us on edge if they didn't get any further info which really didn't sit well with me.
