That's BIG! 6.6 aftershocks! Yikes!

Here's an update (for now; as of 4:43pm):

http://www.kitv.com/news/hawaii/No-tsuna...index.html

EWA BEACH, Hawaii —The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center says a tsunami warning is in effect for the Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, Nauru, Papua New Guinea, Tuvalu, New Caledonia, Kosrae, Fiji, Kiribati and Wallis and Futuna after a magnitude-8.0 earthquake near the Santa Cruz Islands Tuesday afternoon.

Scientists say there is no threat to Hawaii.

The first wave came into Lata Wharf in the Solomon Islands at 3:29 p.m. Hawaii time and the measurement is 3-feet-tall.

The earthquake struck at around 3:12 p.m. Hawaii time.

The U.S. Geological Survey is reporting at least five aftershocks with the strongest being a magnitude of 6.6

A tsunami watch is posted for Samoa, Kermadec Islands, New Zealand, American Samoa, Tonga, Australia, Niue, Cook Islands, Indonesia, Wake Island, Chuuk, Jarvis Island, Guam, Northern Marianas, Palmyra Island, Yap, Johnston Island, Minamitorishima, Belau and Midway Island.

Oh, my goodness . I have been keeping an eye on the Solomon Islands as they have had many earthquakes over 6.4 this last couple weeks.. Between Alaska and there the Pacific Plate is rearing a nasty, unstable head. It's going to b something to keep an eye on. Wonder what it will mean for us in the long run.

AS I have often said, IF A TSUNAMI IS COMING AND ANYONE NEEDS TO MOVE OUT OF LOW LAYING AREAS, WE ARE UP ON THE MOUNTAIN WITH FENCED ARAS FOR LARGE ANIMLS, ETC..... HOUSE HAAS ONY TWO BEDROOMS BUT YOU CAN BRING YOUR SLEEPING BAGS AND FUTONS IF NEED BE..... Smile PAM

I want to be the kind of woman that, when my feet
hit the floor each morning, the devil says

"Oh Crap, She's up!"

I was at the store when the radio announcement of earthquake came on, along with word that the tsunami impact for Hawaii was being determined. I looked at the clerk, she looked at me, then she said "Spam is on aisle 5" Smile

Hi Advisory #3 expects no destructive impact to Hawaii:

also a good bookmark for the computer is the Pac Tsunami link:
http://ptwc.weather.gov/

BASED ON ALL AVAILABLE DATA A DESTRUCTIVE PACIFIC-WIDE TSUNAMI IS
NOT EXPECTED AND THERE IS NO TSUNAMI THREAT TO HAWAII. REPEAT. A
DESTRUCTIVE PACIFIC-WIDE TSUNAMI IS NOT EXPECTED AND THERE IS NO
TSUNAMI THREAT TO HAWAII.

A TSUNAMI HAS BEEN CONFIRMED IN AREAS NEAR THE EPICENTER
BUT IT SHOULD NOT AFFECT HAWAII.

thats an average quake for that region... and it would swamp thousands of atolls/island before it would ever reach Hawaii...
In other words, its not in the right spot and no where nearly big enough...

A M8.0 earthquake is an average quake for that region? Well, blow me down, remind me never to vacation in that area.

8 is a good size one... the real average is somewhat lower though Smile

its the most quake prone area of the world.... New Hebrides Trench, Vanuatu, New Britain, New Caledonia, Papua New Guinea, Solomons, Mariana Islands, etc. are all in the ring of fire and have quakes bigger than 6-7's very very often...

Vanuatu alone has over 200 quakes a year over 4.5, with many over 6.
I counted 60 in 2-1/2 months from Nov-Jan, and 18 in only 4 days Dec21-24, with 5 of them being 6.6 or more...

but its all for not, as the "Hawaii Tsunami Warning" was a MISTAKE and never should have been issued in the 1st place....
