Backed up to Volcano highway on bypass and in Keaau. I hope these aren't tourists or looky loos heading to Pahoa to view the lava. I'm just trying to get home from work.

What's up with Keaau traffic tonight?

Thanks for the info, TomK. It took 45 minutes to go 3 miles. Can't wait until the roadwork is done.

Yeah, this is the first time I've seen them work this late (although I've been away for the last couple of weeks, so don't know if they did this during that time as well). Perhaps I'm being a little cynical, but Tuesday is a holiday and am wondering if work was being finished off late so everyone could get a four or five day weekend. I doubt very much the workers knew what chaos they were causing miles away.
Let's see if the road is being worked on Friday and/or Monday.

They should use the $23 Million for road construction and not the park, that was supposed to be built in Pahoa. Traffic lights should be a high priority, not a park. We have lost to many lives on Hwy 130 and now that the lava is going to cross Hwy 130, they need to reconsider, the priorities of the Puna District.
Let's pray, that this is the blessing, that Pele will bestow upon us, to have safe road for us all to travel on! [ ![]()

Neither did the police, who are supposed to be used as traffic control in the construction zones, but instead, stand around and talk to the construction people and act oblivious to 3+ mile long backups.

There was a major paving event that started in the afternoon. I saw it starting on the way into town and chose a different route home.

Just remember: they're on the clock, your time is free. They should use the $23 Million for road construction and not the park The money would be better spent figuring out how to reduce the number of "necessary" trips to Hilo -- by which I don't mean "more development (and possible sprawl)", the whole "build more road for more cars" paradigm is seriously flawed.

Just wait for the real traffic problems to start in about two weeks. That's when the displaced students from Pahoa will start school in Keaau. Every afternoon while the construction crews work, Keaau schools will end their day for both Keaau students as well as Pahoa students, and they'll all try to make their way home at about the same time. A little later workers will join the commute on their drive home from Hilo. We should have complete gridlock from about 2 PM until 7 PM. Especially on days when road construction runs late like yesterday.
There's still a long way to go until that section of Highway 130 is completed.
