When wild pigs would wander into a camp ground area we would catch them by hand without dogs. We would heard them up against a fenced area and go grab them. This was with sows shoats and piglets. I never did that with a boar, and good thing. Looking back on that I think "what the hell?". But it's what were were told to do so we did it. Grab them by their hind legs. I'm not suggesting you try that. I'n no longer dumb enough to do it. Pua`a S. FL Big Islander to be.

Yep, he did mention dogs too. I guess that's what people are still doing around here. This is something I dont think I'll try, but free range pork would be great!

I've seen the hand and knife approach done by a 12 year old boy. Impressive.... and messy. Oink is correct. They were serious.
Assume the best and ask questions.

I asked a farmer friend once about his three legged pig. It seems that his tractor slipped out of gear and was rolling down a hill out of control......
The machine was headed straight for his little girl. The pig ran into the path of the tractor and pushed his daughter out of the way at the last second. I asked him if that was how the pig lost his leg....."Nope", he said; "A pig THAT good, you don't want to eat all at once". []

The whole jumping in with a knife to slit the pig's throat thing is a big rite of passage for the kids around here, not just boys either. My first year teaching I had one girl who was the ultimate girly girl in school, who proudly showed me the picture of her first kill. It showed her standing next to the dead body of one huge boar with curved tusks surrounded by proud Dad, uncles, cousins and their dogs. Because she weighed less than the boar they didn't make her pack it out like they made her brother pack out the smaller pig he got. I asked her Mom if she worried when her kids went out hunting and she asked me if I worried how I was going to eat if the barges quit running.

I think I'd take my chances killing pigs than driving on the roads around here...
Was the mom wearing a born here not flown here T-shirt as well?

The DNLR has a complete list. Pass the word among locals and a trapper or pig hunter will surface.

When I lived in Hawaiian Acres on 11 Road there was a local pig hunter and he shared what he caught. He built a trap out of a metal barrel with papaya in it - tilted a bit so that when the pig went in to eat the papaya, the barrel would stand upright.
At the time, I too had up to 11 pigs I counted. Damaging to the grass and vegetation. He also used a bow and arrow. Someone will turn up - free eats for all. Anna www.criticalmojo.com |
