On the east side. Willing to drive!
I love good sushi! Love non-standard types of sushi using cream cheese and smoked salmon.
Any suggestions on a good place? Would be good if it also had non fish sushi or other options for my non fish eating husband.

Ocean Sushi is one.
Downtown Hilo
Years ago, I made it my purpose to eat my way down the sushi menu, each trip the next choice. Now I usually just get the "H"
ETA: my BIL would order hamburger there.

Ocean Sushi is our standby, but our neighbors like Ichiban, & Miwa... and one of our friends likes the more avante cuisine at the sushi bar in the little place inside the building w/Hilo Bay Sugar Shack shave ice....they have brown rice suchis & mainly deal with mostly local produce

We ate at Nihon Saturday night; they have a nice looking sushi menu, also a good selection of cooked food. It's been taken over by the folks from Hilo Bay Cafe, and the menu is reportedly changing (I don't know, it was my first time there). We ate outside on the lanai, gorgeous sunset and wonderfully balmy evening. But yikes, the bill!

Dayna: I think it will be hard to find a place with Lox & Bagels Here ? Most people Hilo side think all food should be $ 5.00 or less for a meal. Good food in Kona People pay more but Quality is good,You get what you pay for.

Sushi Rock in Hawi - it's really amazing gourmet custom rolls. Also sometimes live music, and always local art.

I don't know what lox and bagels and $5.00 meals have to do with sushi! I'm not looking for cheap food, I'm looking for GOOD food.
I do like the custom roll option. But I also love standard sushi as well.
I'm excited to try out Ocean sushi since so many folks love it there. Next time I'm in Hawi (maybe in a couple months) I'll stop by Sushi Rock!

Dayna, one of my favs at Ocean Sushi is the "greenbay" roll with salmon, cream cheese & asparagus....not quite an "oy vey" with lox & a schmear...but I think that using salmon & cream cheese in combos is what you were meaning???
Tthey have many other varieties, "manhatten" & "caterpillar" are a couple more favs... but soo many to choose... DH loves the sushi box C.... nice selection & he is sated...of course, with a few pieces from whateva I order!
Also good to hear about Nihon, we have staid away for soo long, but love the patio table view on a clear sunset...just hated to bring anyone to it, the food was so.... institutional...
