Today I picked up a bunch of trash that someone had thrown in the road by my home on 9 road. I found receipts with someone's name on them. Via a friends Facebook search, this individual lives in hilo. What should I do with this information? I don't want this person littering in my neighborhood or anywhere else on the island and thinking they can get away with it. The receipts were dated from August and the person used their Ebt card to buy stuff at two different stores.

Find out where they live and dump the trash on their front door step? I think I would be tempted to do that, along with a note about how their inconsiderate behavior affects other people and the aina. Maybe they wouldn't care, but it would be funny to see their reaction.

Turn it over to the cops. They'll track 'em down, arrest them, fine them, and make them pick up the trash. Furthermore, they will have a record that will haunt them the rest of their lives, condemning them to the Group W bench.

Contact them and ask nicely if they have an explanation.

We decided to send them a polite and respectful and non-accusatory Facebook message to find out what happened. They appear to be a proud grandparent and would/should care about our keiki having a clean future. I'll post if I get a response, although I'm expecting them to not respond

There have been numerous instances when some elderly person hires someone to haul out their trash to the transfer station... and guess what happens.
But you never know.
Assume the best and ask questions.

We considered the possibility of somebody dumping someone else's trash there. Hopefully the person on the receipt will respond and clear this up. The person whose name is on the receipt appears to be a grandparent but is not elderly. Maybe in her 50s and went to hilo college and has a job at a well respected business in hilo

It's not always deliberate, the trash collecting trucks are overfull and uncovered.

Truthfully there is almost nothing you can do. Cannot get them arrested, that is false. Should not dump it in their yard. Various reasons such as the yard may belong to someone else and they are just occupying space there. However you still did the right thing for simply picking it up. Thank you for being a good samaritan. We appreciate it. It's those type of low-life litterbug people who ironically you may see picking up trash later on in life with a orange HCCC jumpsuit on.

When we had that problem start and continue a few times, I promptly collected it all took the garbage back to the original owner and tossed it into their yard.
It never happened again.
