Kau Coffee #1
#1
This morning the Kau Coffee mill received top honors for best American coffee and is in the top ten running for worlds best. Tomorrow they will anounce that winner. OK, this isn't Puna but it's close. I think that there is maybe a silver lining to all of that vog that hits Pahala. The coffee is great and the organic vegies from Kau that are sold at the Hilo Farmers Market are beautiful. The new Kau Coffee Mill www.kaucoffeemill.com in Wood Valley is now open to the public. It's worth a stop to see some really positive things that are going on down there.

I forgot to mention that the competition is the annual event put on by the Specialty Coffee Assoc. of America. This year it's in Boston.

I really like good coffee.

Their unwashed beans are exceptional. By far the best coffee I have ever tasted.

Hmmm, next time I'm down that way I'll have to try it and compare it with "sharky's" coffee, that is in Puna! Smile Still the best coffee I've ever had IMO.

All regions of the Big Island put out exceptional coffee. Just so happens, Kona has had the lionshare of the market for most of recent history. That Ka'u product is for real. Quite possibly some of the best coffee you will ever have in your life. And they have done all the right things to move their product to the front of the high-end coffee lines. Being the "best of the USA," and "TOP 5 in the world," is no small feat. Those farmers work very hard. Kudos to Ka'u.

But as I stated in the early lines of this post, the entire Big Island got great coffee. I've had from Puna (lower and upper), I've also had some grown up in Kaiwiki. Hamakua got a nice earthy taste. All good coffee.....with different variations depending on region. Ka'u has always grown great produce. The combination of abundant sunshine and land makes it the perfect spot for agriculture. Water can be an issue, but for the most part, Ka'u should be the state's bread basket.

Yes, stop by and see the 1200 acres Developer/Kau Coffee Mill's Ed Olson's leasing to AKP to grow GMO "sterile" grasses to decimate the local coffee business, contaminate the water table and kill off the bees. Profits from biofuel is much more lucrative than leasing land to small farmers. That's why the leases are short.
