giving birth in hawaii
#11
Thank you! I saw the doctor today and he said that my best bet would be to go to Oahu the last three weeks of my pregnancy and have the baby at kapiolani, but he wasn't sure if airfare would be covered. He really made me feel better about it, he also said that a few hotels give discounts for people in my situation. He wasn't sure about the Ronald McDonald house, he just said first priority is given to those with special needs so maybe there will be space open when I am there. Hopefully, praying for the best.

Who would be "covering" your airfare to Oahu?

Hi Ayana, last year I was sent to Oahu to have my baby as I was high risk. My insurance didn't cover the cost of the accomodation and we have a very low income but I was eligible for Quest and they arranged and paid for everything, it was such a relief and I am forever grateful. I stayed at the Pagoda hotel which is where many patients from the islands stay when needing medical treatment on Oahu, I was there for 4 weeks. My baby was born at Kapiolani and the doctors and nurses were nothing short of fantastic. I am so glad I was able to go there as shortly after the birth something went horribly wrong and I needed emergency surgery which saved my life, afterwards I was in the ICU. They said if it had happened in Hilo Hospital I wouldn't have made it as they just don't have the specialist doctors or medical equipment. Wishing you all the best!

Thanks for the info rarni, so glad you made it and are happy with kapiolani. How did you arrange for all of it to happen on your insurance? Did they pay for the hotel as well?

My OB told me to apply for Quest as my own insurance didn't cover accomodation and Quest paid for my hotel, they also arranged transport to take me to all my medical appointments in Honolulu. I was referred by my OB to the Fetal Diagnostic Institute of the Pacific: http://www.hawaiifdip.com/ and they co-ordinated everything for me. I can't rate them highly enough.
