What kind of employment is available in the puna area? I have read classifieds as well as cragslist, but they rarely give a true taste of a job situation. I saw some county and state jobs that pay well, can a haole like me even have a chance at one of those?

I don't know if I agree with that. I had job offers before I even moved here with two different companies... One with a local business, and a major corp keeps offering me various management positions on a regular basis. I turned down all the offers. I accepted a different type of offer with the local business that allows me to be a stay at home Mom but work a little on occasion.

You might have a chance at one of those State or County jobs, but not until you've moved here, been here a while, adapted to the local culture and way of life, and been accepted by Pele. The same goes for non-government jobs, but not to the same degree. If you're planning to move here without a job lined up, be sure to bring enough cash to last you a while and/or have enough for a return ticket.

It really depends on your job skills.... but remember, if you have a skill that many others do, and there is a list of local & off island applicants....wellll you are an unknown....

It is hard to imagine HOW small this island is...until you start realizing how many times & haw many different occasions you see people you know...& then realize that kids growing up here that are involved in any type of activity most likely were involved in that activity with kids from all around the island.... and their folks were then involved... & you start realizing how interconnected these relations are... and can start to appreciate that some one who grew up here is a KNOWN, they are here, their past is known, there family is known... and most likely they will not leave in a year or two....

Some one moving onto the island....nothing is known...

That said, if you have a skill that is needed, then it is up to you to earn respect... which varies by job & location - helping, being a part of the group & sharing are hallmarks to strive for...

There isn't a lot of infrastructure in Puna, therefore few jobs. Go outside Puna (Hilo area) and the unemployment rate is pretty close to the rest of the nation. I hear a lot of transplants complaining that there aren't any jobs on the Big Island. That isn't really true. There may not be jobs in the fields that you are experienced with or at the salary level you are accustomed to. But there are jobs here. I don't think that being a haole is going to make a difference at most places if you've really truly left the mainland behind.

If you are in the medical field like RN, xray tech or doc, you probably will do okay even being new.

Even for haole kine, but maybe not outdoor county/park type jobs... try for find one haole worker on road crew or cutting grass , never

Lazy is part of it, I know of a couple people that came and found a job in the mall/etc within a week, and others who say theyve tried and havent found one for 3+ years lol ya right...

Its just that many here just kick back and collect there $320 EBT and dont try hard to find a real job...

you usually do need transportation for a job here too, and thats as key for some car-less people in lower Puna, far from the Hilo jobs

If you can make attitude adjustment, work exchange on local farms is a way of living. Try google Hawaii work exchange or wwoofer...
