Agree 110% that County could not manage this on their own.
More interesting issue: assuming even a "small" 5000-seat venue, who will book it, given the time/expense of traveling here? Could you even sell 5000 seats -- to any event -- on this island? (What performance would 5000 people even agree on?)

AND, having booked it, look forward to a several day stay at such stalwart venues as: the (now bankrupt) Naniloa! And, on top of everything else, therein lies a major problem.

Edith Kanaka`ole may be deceptively large, as it is it seats 3,500, and Merrie Monarch could EASILY sell more tickets...
So I really do think that the question raised by kalakoa "Could you even sell 5000 seats -- to any event -- on this island? (What performance would 5000 people even agree on?)" would be YES, you COULD... but how many of those events each year could you book....at the cost per seat that a new stadium would necessitate....
On that, I would say it is doubtful. Heck, I am not sure you could even justify temp restacked riser seating to increase the total seating - It would be hard to justify by the current ticket prices (free for the graduation & $5-10/ night for Merrie Monarch....) It would take decades to amortize even a cheap temp restack risers....
But that said, many of us also forget to factor in how many people visit the east side on a daily basis.... and the fact that these thousands of visitors every week MIGHT want an entertainment venue/arena...if it was well planned.... Just do not let Ken F. have his hand n it...or it, too, will go belly up!

Lot of shortsightedness in these responses. Most folks have accepted the stance that East Hawaii will never amount to s__t. I tend to believe differently. I'm born and raised here and still believe we have the capacity to be greater.

Its not shortsightedness its economic reality. Do the math
East Hawaii could be great if people didn’t protest every thing that would create good jobs. And the politicians on Oahu work so hard at lining their pockets at the expense of everyone else

Seeb, I agree with what you're saying but those conditions you described exist everywhere not just puna. That said I don't really want an arena either

Not so much shortsightedness. We don't doubt the people here or their ability to support good things, but we do acknowledge that this should in no way be a government project. Heck, we can't even be sure that the existing governments would even be legitamately supportive of such an endeavor.

They should build it. Make a right-a-way for the PMAR as part of the site plan, and there you go
