Another option here is Biodiesel fueled vehicles. Pacific Biodiesel built a 12 million dollar plant in Shipman Business Park that recycles used french fry oil from all over the island and many other sources including growing oil seed stock here to make high quality fuel here in Puna.

It's cleaner, better for your diesel engine and it creates jobs here. It also helps reduce Hawaii's reliance on foreign fossil fuels, plus it's about 50 cents per gallon cheaper! A win, win, win for Puna.

Pacific Biodiesel pump (B100 Only)
16-240 Mikahala Street, Keaau, HI 96749

Fueling hours: Monday, Wednesday, Friday 9:00 am to 2:00 pm

We have an 06 Jeep Liberty CRD that runs on Big Island Biodiesel's B100 biodiesel every day since they opened.

Jeep has a new Grand Cherokee coming out next year with a 3.0 litre, v6 turbo diesel engine made in Italy. (It will get about half the mpg as the Liberty though).

I gotta agree with Norm on this one. The price of gas is always going to be cheaper than the price of blood. I drove one of those 3 cylinder Geo's for a couple of weeks and loved it. They were peppy and well engineered. The distributer was attached directly to the cam shaft. I was in my twenties then and immortal. I'm older now and bruise easily. I wouldn't want to see a collision between a Prius and a Land Rover. You get these "best safety in class" claims. Well, if the "class" is "scooters", it doesn't mean much.
