Felt it pretty easily here on 23RD and just off Kaloli. This wasn't near as strong as 3 or 4 I felt in the Seattle/Tacoma area. Windows rattled, but nothing fell.

HILO, HAWAII (HawaiiNewsNow) -
A magnitude 5.6 earthquake has occurred off the coast of the Big Island, the U.S. Geological Survey said. The quake was at a depth of 25.4 miles and was not strong enough to generate a tsunami threat to Hawaii.
The quake was centered 34 miles southeast of Pahala and 56 miles south of Hilo, but was felt across the state. Hundreds of comments have come into the Hawaii News Now Facebook page describing the rumble.
"Felt it in Kailua on Oahu, hearts still racing," wrote Shirley Okumura.
"The house was jiggling in Pauoa, Oahu," said Mahealani Villanueva.
"I actually [saw] my house and car shake while in my garage. Talk about spooky," wrote Mel N Rod.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued the following report after the earthquake, "No tsunami is expected. Repeat. No tsunami is expected. However...some areas may have experienced strong shaking. This will be the only statement issued for this event unless additional data are received."

The quake was orginally measured at 5.2 and was upgraded to a magnitude 5.6.

I was on the second floor of a very solid concrete building on the Hilo Bayfront and the whole roomful of people I was with felt it, the smartest one ducked under a table. It was a small shudder followed by a bigger side to side shake that lasted longer. I always perceive big earthquakes as a thumping/groaning sound but other people with me don't always seem to hear it.
It really made me think about how close I was to the ocean.

Remember under a door frame or under a table is no longer the safest spot. In fact in the Simpson shake tests (can see on you tube), doorways/window frames give first.
The triangle created next to a piece of furniture is the safest spot... if you dont have time to get out of building.

I was driving so didnt feel it. I think this is really strange. Is it because the roads are so bad already?

Your car has tires & a suspension system that absorb shock...even higher magnitude quakes are not as noticable in a vehicle...
Earthquakes are also not as noticed outside as they are in a rigid structure. I was out in my yard & did not feel it, but the roof made a pop (kinda like what a turkey landing on it might sound like....never having HEARD a turkey landing on a metal roof).. went inside & all I could tell was that there was a chain light swinging...
