I noticed that some properties have "name withheld" where the owner's information goes. I'm thinking that could be smart with all the identity theft etc going on. Does anybody know how to get the name withheld?
I have sent the question to the tax office but have not yet heard back.

Back in the day when you could look up properties by last name, the withheld names were usually DV victims.
You no longer can look up by last name unless you pay for the service like realtors do.

That was a fun way to spend an hour.
I think I also read that removing the name search function had something to do with police officers/county officials.
Not sure how identity theft would factor.
I personally don't think tax assessments should be anonymous, if I had my way, there would be additional info alluding to how much a taxpayer uses.
Growing up, the town published an annual report that included name address and taxes. Then again, all the residences voted how taxes were spent too, unlike the thievery of today.

Here's the official answer!
You may request to have the information withheld on our website only by mailing your request to our offices at:
Real Property Appraiser
Department of Finance, Real Property Tax Division
County of Hawaii
101 Pauahi Street, Suite 4
Hilo, HI 96720-4224
The letter, signed by all owners, should include verbiage to the extent that your ‘name be withheld from the Real Property Tax Website’ in addition to the Tax Map Key and a contact number, in the event we require additional information from you. Unfortunately, as these records are considered public information, individuals may still be privy to this information if the request is made via phone or an in-office request. If you have any additional questions/concerns, please feel free to contact us at (808) 961-8201.
