"then you are a coward and have failed in your civic duty"
Make a bad decision and one could also end up with a manslaughter charge ..... In the context of the situation - the police station being a hundred yards ..... documentation and a 911 call may be the best option
Kind of like working with my Dalmation - short on smarts and long on the tooth - have to watch him as well ..... - grin

I thought it was clear that it is a report taking/writing substation, as in not normally staffed.

In most cases a very true statement, and yes, if you take action as a civilian, you must be right, so there is risk. However, if you can stand by while a child is being victimized, in such a manner as was described, then I really don't know what more to say. I can't detach myself from the suffering of a victim to such a degree. I don't think it's healthy if you can. Aren't most of us Americans? Aren't we better than that?
That said, with no further reports on the incident I wonder if the incident is factual.

As a first responder - first thing I learned was detachment - second thing I learned from my mentors was gallows humor to help with the emotional overload - one gets used to it .....

Being retired from the Police department and someone who used to INSTRUCT first responders, there is no excuse for a 20 minute response time in Keaau town, even if ALL of the Puna officers are engaged elsewhere. Hilo is not that far away and should respond if called. 911 calls for police all go to the same room in Hilo. As far as detachment absolutely, WHILE YOU ACT, not while you sit and watch.

Oh I forgot to mention, domestic abuse with violence involved is a number 1 priority call (first to be dispatched with code 3 response).

Domestic abuse and false alarms (insert gallows humor here) ..... My gut reaction was the later
If it were the real deal in that parking lot - there would have been five of "us" folks on it
If I were going to make a mess - it would not be in that parking lot..... Wrong - grin

I always love "The Baby" as if a baby would make it any worse than a teen or an adult. For some reason... People go ape $hit when a baby is injured or dies.
But on a second thought... I totally agree with Cary ... Second hand info while could be true --- most the time it is not. I think we should all just relax and enjoy the day till we get all the facts.

Except that you can. And what does NSA have anything to do with this? The OP is not eye witness, it is second hand anecdotal. A baby "thrown" from a truck, not once, but three times is going to have considerable injuries, if not fatal. A hospital seeing a child brought in with injuries like that is going to call the authorities. A food court, and yet, not a single other witness? With almost everybody carrying cell phones with cameras, not one person recorded an altercation of this magnitude, which by accounts, lasted several minutes. And there isn't a report on any news site. For all the stretched concern, did anybody have enough concern to contact the police for 911 calls?

I don't know what to make of this. If true it hurts all of us in many ways. The child even if not physically injured is probably doomed, having to grow up among such people. Others would be traumatized simply by witnessing such a thing. If you were there, with a gun, would you use it? Would you actually shoot someone, witness the blood spatter, stick around to defend yourself in court?
This story seems designed to make people jump to radical conclusions. It's one of those examples where logically a bystander should have no excuse for not jumping in but practically there are plenty of reasons not to. As much as I hate the idea of being forced to share the world with such animals (if the story happened as alleged), going off half cocked could get you killed and not change anything else. So many questions. So the women repeatedly retrieved the child for the abuser to throw again? Not saying it can't be true. There are some pretty f***ed up people in the world. I still wish that there was another source of information than a 2nd hand report.
You see all kinds of stuff on Utube. This would have been internet gold. Sounds gross but it would answer a lot of questions. I know MY phone takes video.
I know how hard it is to keep thinking in such a stressful situation so I am not blaming anyone for not getting video. I do want to point out the pressure that exists to not doubt the story simply because of how bad it is if it is true given how defenseless the victim is. I therefor defend my right to keep in the back of my mind how I haven't heard about this from any other source including people I know who live in the area, no news, no tourists who took video, etc, plus what a perfect story to generate an intense emotional reaction.
I wont try and defend what is true, you can decide that for yourself, I trust my friend and witnessed her shaken state directly after the event, her boyfriend was also there.(he did not act.) I posted it to get the info out and also to try and find more info and witnesses, I have posted everything I know, I posted the thread from my phone a half hour after it happened. Obviously no one who has posted here was there, so none of us really know. I probably should not have jumped at the gun topic, but then again thats my nature, very political and truth is on my side. How do you think the police would have handled it if they had showed? With lollipops? Responsible law abiding citizens should be able to handle it the same way or even better.(faster) I hope the baby is fine, though as a previous poster mentioned even if the baby is ok their life will be less then choice given their family. The reason people get excited about defending babies is because they are always innocent and always defenseless so someone else needs to protect them from the issues that are not their fault. I hope that something happened afterwards to right the situation, but given the lack of news, or any other confirmation, no doubt nothing happened, as is typical in these situations. Sorry I cannot facilitate this topic further, so I will bow out now.
