Vog in Volcano.......
#1
I have been looking for a place to buy (vacant land or home) for the past two years in Puna. Will be returning again this November to continue the process. I have not spent a lot of time looking in the immediate area of Volcano, but have started to get a little more interest in this area (the first blast of summer heat here in Kansas has reminded me of my extreme dislike for the heat). I have been to Hawaii more times than I have fingers, so am somewhat familiar with the pros and cons of the different areas of Puna, and the island. My question is what about vog in the Volcano area. I think I had heard of a new vent becoming active???....has this changed the vog level in the village of Volcano, and surrounding immediate area? looking for comments like 'about the same as always, or getting worse, etc'... I understand this is all based on wind direction, so looking for general comments of change or no change.
Your input would be appreciated, especially if you live in the area currently.

I am also planning to move to Puna later this year. I have explored most of Puna by visiting 40+ times over the last 20 years, and Volcano is to cold for my taste. Vog is not often a problem in Volcano from what I have heard and experienced.

What I am certain about is nobody likes to talk about it. It is kind of like if you don't talk about it it will go away. [Wink]

I started out with nothing and I still have most of it.

You may have been to Puna many times, but have you spent many nights in Volcano, especially in the winter? In January its common for temperatures to fall into the 40's during the early morning. Temperatures in the 30's have occurred. People actually heat their homes and wear sweaters and jackets!

Are you sure this is the "Hawaii" experience you have in mind?

If the new vent you are referring to is Pu'u'o'o, it's more than 20 years old. The trade winds still blow the same direction almost all year and any new 'vents' open up on the rift zone, which means Volcano is probably always going to be upwind on most days. That said, when a Kona wind blows, you could get some vog, just like anywhere else in Puna. But at least it's not HOVE, which gets vog the rest of the year (check the paint on cars in HOVE - most have been corroded down a few layers from the acidity of the vog).

Thanx for your input. No I have never spent a 'night' at Volcano, just day time visits (all in the winter). As mentioned earlier, I really dislike the heat, I have found that my optimal operating temperatures are between 48-70 degrees. I have always found it easier to warm up than cool down!
Yes my visits to Volcano have conjured up the thought, 'am I still in Hawaii?' I guess I am trying to choose between it and Leilani Estates, and yes I know, BIG difference. Would like to grow tropical fruit, and flowers ..... Don't like heat and mosquitos! What to do...Smile

Thanx for your input! Yes I actually fell in love with a little area called Wood Valley down that way, but have ruled it out due to Vog. If you haven't been, utter tranquility.

In my opinion, either HPP or Leilani. [:p]
