I've got this large nest made from small grasses with what seems
to have a hole 2.5" dia. in the side. I Have not been able to see any birds coming or going. It seems to be the size of a oblong basket ball Any ideas ???? Actually looks like the shape of a paper wasp nest, but is not.
I Don't want to scare something.

It sounds like a weaver (Ploceidae) nest...have heard there are some on Oahu...maybe here too???
Added: the Bishop has one species listed at Pu`u Wa`awa`a...maybe it is the Ploceus velatus???

I took some photos and it looks like a bag of Sphagnum Moss. I couldn't get the hole
it come out in the photo. It doesn't look neat like a weaver bird nest. Maybe it has
been having some of Puna's finest...;-) and didn't do a neat job.

Moss sphere is most likely a wren, probably Pacific wren. image:

Yah, that is what I thought...but the description of the nest sounds like wren...maybe a new intro...or???
