We didnt go often - but my friend and I would enjoy lunch there every couple of months - great view of Hilo Bay and a bento with katsu and tempura that we would split (with an extra bowl of Miso Soup) because it truly was large - was $19 + tip. Every once in awhile we would order sushi there too. Loved the waitresses that had been there forever too.
Food was not extraordinary nouvelle Pacific Rim cuisine - just basic bentos and good sushi, but view and service was awesome.
That other place that shall remain nameless is taking it over.
Nihon closes June 22 not to reopen re-incarnated until Oct.
I am very sad.

It will be reopened under Hilo Bay Cafe.
They are already running it, but are renovating.
As I understand, when they reopen the present HBC closes.

It is my understanding that wonderful Roy (from Nihon) will still be the sushi chef. Let's hope so!

Just curious why you say "That other place that shall remain nameless is taking it over"? Have you had a bad experience with them? Best food in Hilo as far as I'm concerned and finally they will actually be on the bay. Sorry if I'm missing something.

I love Hilo Bay CAfe but it ruined it for me when they took the scallops off the menu....

Hilo Bay Cafe is awesome!
Kim Snugerud and Josh Kettner are not.
THerefore, I chose to spend my money at other establishments.

Yes, not very good food that we ordered, and really bad service for $35 for Lunch for 2 with NO drinks.
Nihon's bento plate was not anything incredibly special but their service was always great and the waitresses were anything but pretentious. We always counted on a certain quality all the time.
When we went to another place recently that just everyone raved about, we tried to review it honestly here.
I am sad because for the view, the price of lunch for 2 will double and we'll miss the pleasant service, and well the food .... HBC has no bento plate. Now - the fish place right down the st is great for takeout and we'll probably have a picnic in front of the Old Nihon Bldg instead. Ahi poke and a iced tea $8, - lunch with a view of the bay? Priceless!!
