I thought KTA had the cheapest tofu, because the package is much bigger than "standard"? I think it's around 2 dollars, but it appears to be almost twice as much. It's the local brand made in Hilo. It has a Japanese name.

yeah? Twice as much eh? Pretty sure the average weight is about a 16 oz. Are you talking about the blocks that are in a bag? Thanks, next time I'm in KTA, I'll have to check it out.
KTA also sells whole AKU fish for 2.99 lb. Tho, the people that sell fish just a few blocks up on the corner past KTA sell for 2 bucks a lb. It's easy to debone and cook. Taste way better than canned.

Bought the tofu today at KTA. IT is 20 ounces vs 14 oz regular package. It cost 2.49. It is Oshiro brand and has a bird on the cover. It is in the back of the produce section at the main store. IT's made in HIlo.

I keep a few emergency frozen meals in the freezer for those "I just got home from work at 8:00pm and I need to eat NOW!" times. I try to stick with things with few or no ingredients with more than 4 syllables, or that I just can't pronounce; Michellinas frozen dinners fit my criteria and they are on sale at Malama market for 3 for $5. I think that as usual, they are even cheaper at Sack N Save and Foodland.
From a business sense I know it makes the Malama Market/Foodland/Sack N Save corporation more money to have a sliding scale price range based on how far from the competition you are, but it still feels like they are charging the poorest people, who live the farthest from good paying jobs, more when the Malama Markets in Ka'u, Puna, and Honoka'a have 20% higher prices than the Foodlands and Sack N Saves on the same island. I just don't think it costs 20% more to sell a frozen dinner in Pahoa, than it does in Kea'au. But the parent company knows it is hard to vote with your dollars when there is only one store in town and gas is over $4.50 a gallon. Carol

Sullivan family has become quite wealthy with this business plan. Back in 1970, a group of us young poor house wives fought back in Ewa Beach where our our only grocery store was Foodland . We pooled our shopping lists and took turns driving into Gems groceries in Waipahu!!! The savings made us all smile!

KTA is having a sidewalk produce sale tomorrow morning (sat) from 7am-2pm. Grapes and white nectarines are .99 pound.

Foodland has cheez-its for 2/3.00. Also, Roman Meal whole grain bread- 2/7.00. Pau vodka is on sale for 9.00 off regular price. Never heard of vodka made from pineapple but I had to have it, once I saw it. Also, not sure if the name means you're "pau" after drinking it, but I think the name is a riot. Almost forgot the nectarines for .89/lb. PRices good only for today, friday.

I got fresh Driscoll's blueberries at Cost u Less yesterday for $1.69 A PINT!!! Not a misprint, couldn't believe it. Felt bad for the people paying $4.99 a pint in Safeway. Also had a delicious FREE birthday meal ($11.99) at IHop. After the opening day fiasco at Zippy's, IHop was wonderful.
