I'm sure the police will be extra-vigilant, what with their shiny new raise and all.

What's that? You can't get phone service to call the police with? Your fault for living there!

There are some of us who know that, if a stranger, or strangers, break into your home that your life IS in danger. Anyone that is stupid enough, desperate enough, with enough audacity to break into your home may well kill you. It has happened to me, and I am a survivor. I will not run from anyone that forces their way into my house. I also, at 60 years old, will not get into a hand to hand situation with someone way younger than I am unless it's my last resort. And this has nothing to do with possibly losing possesions. Possesions are covered by insurance. It has to do with principles. I respect others, and I require the same respect.

My cats are fantastic guards...amazing how keen their senses are. They can't bark but they growl loud enough to alert me if danger is imminent. Then I slide into self-defense mode with airhorn, bug spray, big pepper spray, bat, shovel, fly swatter, pellet gun, hmmmm, last resort....high heels!

I have survived two home invasions thirty years ago. Based on my experience I would prefer to be unarmed. I did get a good, very good, dog... a boxer. Haven't had any such problem since.
Assume the best and ask questions.

Based on my layman interpretation of the above referenced law, you are not required to retreat from your home or place of work.
Having read that link I agree, the law isn't quite as anti-tenant or anti-homeowner as I thought, but just as you say, that's also just my personal non-legal-trained opinion. I wonder if it would protect someone saying something online such as "I have a gun in every room, bring it on!". I bet a good prosecutor could use that to their advantage.

Oink, Tom, well said. A few months ago we had over a dozen break-ins within a two block radius. Everyone was on edge. Cops and vice/undercover were looking for the "ring" of thieves. Door to door interviews were conducted each time someone's house was robbed.

I took the opportunity to ask a few pertinent questions of the officers, and come to the same conclusion as you both. You cannot shoot a perp in the back as he's running out the door with your laptop, purse, wallet, or TV. However, if you feel your life and those in the household are at risk, you may shoot/defend yourself against the perp.

At our hale:

Big dogs - Check
Alarm System - Check
Neighbors involved - Check
Word of Mouth (ie. do NOT go over there, etc.)- Check
Bat - Check
Shotgun - Check

We also recently installed an eight (8) camera system which also enhances our chances of providing evidence, if we must defend our lives against the criminals. Big Island Surveillance has a great system for a good price.

Bottom line: (IMO)These kinds of sub-humans who threaten our very lives and our children can not continue to terrorize us in this manner. We must, as a community, help these morons (if possible), or prepare to protect yourselves when all else fails.

No one threatens my family. What say you? How do we deal with this as a community? (So damn disgusted. E kala mai. [Sad!])

daswotimtalkinbout .... NOT necessarily shooting or specifically trying to "kill" but 'executing' what is needed to protect when reason breaks down.

Same same with dogs while one is walking ......

Sad fact of life is you have more to fear from a overzealous DA than a few iceheads trying to steal something for crystal meth fix.

Hawaii needs to ad criminal liability protection to the current Castle law [provides civil liability for now] that Gov. Lingle signed so Homeowners may protect their family within their own home. There should be no duty to retreat inside your own home.

Be safe all.

If I were on your jury, I'd let you shoot the perp in the back.
