This forum - what a find. Thanks again for all the great suggestions, insights and recommendations.
I decided that my first call will be to Jim of JimDee Management. The prices, if I am lucky enough to get them, and the service is pretty much what I am looking for.
Punawebbers; great people and a great resource!

You can haul your own cinder from the Bryson's lot in Pahoa (not the quarry). The sign still says Bryson's, even though someone did mention here that they were bought by Sanford. It is $15 for a Ford Ranger size truckload that you shovel yourself. Red or black available, same price for either last time I was there (2 months ago). I use cinder for raised beds and gardening...though will likely use gravel from JAS Glover when my driveway needs it, which will probably be soon since it's taking a beating lately with all the heavy rain.

Based on the research on this forum, especially this (old) thread, we just finished having our driveway graded and base course installed- and what a fight it was! Over half a dozen times the dozer operator took my husband aside and tried to convince him that cinders would be fine, (and cheaper). Didn't listen, paid more for the base course, and am very happy with the results. Thanks Punaweb!

I also ended up adding a load of 2 1/2 inch gravel because I had a low, wet area. It appeared to work perfectly. I didnt use any cinder either. At first the van was kindof drifting around on the rock, but then it packed down nicely.

Over the long haul paving will pay off. Especially if you do it yourself in increments.
