Except for emergency rescue and medical, I think that all helicopters should be BANNED.

Do you say that about cars whenever you hear of a car crash?

never an excuse to run out of fuel .... on fumes on the way home - seeing the girth of the family from the longhorn state .... most likely was the the difference in not being able to makethat last 500 feet in that little itty bitty hughes loach

Why would a chopper pilot low on gas attempt to make it back to the airport? Should of just put it down at the first open space he could find. Gross incompetence.
One Thing I can always be sure of is that things will never go as expected.

This is why we don't like so many flights over our homes every day. Is it going to take one of these crashing into someone's home for them to change their flight paths? They should have a helicopter center closer to Pu`u `O`o similar to the Waikaloa helicopter center for Blue Hawaiian.

Welll the flights are still going...just one less bird for a bit...
My question would not be why did the pilot try to make it BACK on low fuel, but why would the pilot take off with a 1/4 tank? Obviously they are trying to get too many flights in too little time...and with one more bird out (for repair)...either these pilots (or the heads of the tour companies...which ever is making these stooopid decisions) will need to put safety first (gosh, I seem to remember hearing THAT before!) or we could see much worse.... as there are tourists still in line to take these tours...and they are fun, exciting, a way to see LAVA without walking for miles...all of the above... but they should be done in the safest way possible & as I have said many times, these guys are not... by taking off with about 1/4 tank, this pilot obviously did not give himself the required margin for error... just like their flying directly over all of the schools in Keaau...THEY ARE NOT TAKING ANY SAFETY PRECAUTIONS FOR ERROR...
