Geodesic Dome
#1
Dear friends,

I'm going to purchase a couple acres somewhere in Puna and wish to build ecologically with respect to the land and people around.

One option I'd like to explore is building a GEODESIC DOME !

Anyone out there know a builder / contractor who can help or do you have experience with geodesic domes ?

You could just buy one.

I was a shop foreman for a geodesic dome company back in the 1970s. Licensed by R. Buckminster Fuller. I made perhaps forty or so domes.

I do not claim to be a dome enthusiast... but I am pretty knowledgeable on the subject. What is it you are thinking of doing?

If I ever get to set up my dream permanent campsite on a remote lot in Ka'u or South Kona for an off grid weekend get away site, I would buy my shelter from these folks:

We used one of their grow domes for a greenhouse on the mainland for years, as well as several of their grow rows. I have been in several of the big domes they make at festivals and other events and they are very nice inside and out.

I think this is about the best deal per cubic foot for temporary portable shelter you are ever going to find. My brother went through a serious dome building phase in the seventies and as a permanent structure I agree with Rob.

If they were better, overall, there would be more of them.
I built one back in the 70's, in Davenport, CA.
Not since.

I live in a 32' Geodesic Dome & love it. Everyone says great energy, huge space, light from the 3 opening skylights, good acoustics (when I have a live band) & structurally sound. I didn't build it, but bought it 7 years ago. Even though I have loved living in it, I have other property I must develop, so am thinking about selling. You're welcome to visit & check it out. A geodesic dome beats any other construction for structural integrity and price/square-foot.

When it comes to "making it watertight", all other construction methods beat a geodesic dome.

There is this slightly used one available on Mauna Loa at the 9,000 ft level. Floor plans at link. Interesting how a shipping container (final version probably not a regular shipping container but one that can be folded down flat) with the solar panels and solar heating on top along with a geodesic dome is about the most optimal for an extraterrestrial habitat.

Thanks Carol, Pahoated, kalakoa, DoryGray,

Rob, I was thinking a permitted, permanent structure, 40' with external bathroom, 2 bedrooms (loft), open design with only 1 or 2 interior walls on the ground floor.
Solar, water catchment (off grid). And my wife and I would live on the site to help build it.

I've seen 'kits' online, but I thought a contractor would be needed anyway, so why not have him do the whole thing, or should I buy a kit and hire a contractor to put it together.
What material do you recommend for framing? How about the lanai extensions ?
And what material do you cover it with ?
