Left Hilo at around 5:15pm today, got to Keaau to find the traffic backed up to H-11 at both the merge and Keaau shopping center. Turned around and went straight back to Hilo. Left again at around 6:40 and found the backup was still there but much improved.
Anyone know if this was due to an accident or is this going to be the new normal? Once I got onto H-130 I didn't see any signs of an accident or even of any roadwork, but it was dark so may have missed something.
The most comical pert was while slowly merging at the bottleneck a DoT truck, lights flashing, passed us all on the median and then drove onto the other side of the road, into oncoming traffic, before turning into the transfer station. Obviously something very urgent was going on there despite the fact it had closed an hour earlier. I didn't realise they were allowed to disobey the laws. I guess you learn something every day.

No accident, just traffic backed up. We have to pay higher fees for vehicle registration so that the County can fix the roads and it seems nothing is being done. Where is all of our money going? Makes no sense. Nothing but NONSENSE!

There was a nasty multiple car accident right by the dump. When we went by at 4:40 (it took about an hour to get from Keaau to past the merge)they had just towed one badly damaged car away, were towing another away, and there was still a badly damaged pick up truck plus a zillion smashed papaya on the side of the road. Also what seemed to be every cop in Puna was on site.

The traffic was moving so slow about 5:30, that the guy driving in front of me got out of his car, walked over to a truck in the other lane, asked for a light, and went back to his car smoking a cigarette. Actually, I wasn't watching that close, maybe he bummed the light AND the cigarette!

Another reminder that we need an alternate route between Hilo-Pahoa.

Alternate plan: allow some development so people don't need to "drive to Hilo for everything".

It was unusually backed up yesterday...took me over an hour to get through...I was nearly inclined to go through the Acres, but just decided to stay put. Picked up a pizza 'cause by the time I got home it was laaaate. ¢¾

We watched a Hele On bus crawling through the exact same mess all the cars were in, it isn't like they have a special road or lane for the buses that gets to skip the traffic jams.

Seems to me that more people on the bus = LESS CARS on the road. Think about it.
Tho maybe they will make the new lane a diamond lane. (doubt it) but would laugh if they had one for 3 or more passengers. for the rush hour traffic ... In Honolulu the diamond lane is a joke.
But the best part? You can just sleep on the bus and not get all bent out of shape in slow traffic jams.
