IF you want "civilization" you might look more closely at Hilo. The houses aren't that much more if you factor in gas, and county water etc. I like Puna, but when I am out at my lot in ORchidland, there is a giant friendly pitbull that patrols my street. I just think of him as a well behaved lion, and act accordingly. The area around the medical center and Desilva elementary is really nice in Hilo, and I dont have to worry about "patrolling pitbulls".

I live in Orchidland on 39th and really like it. We have 3 acre lots and easy access to Hilo. We know our neighbors and no danger or rip-offs the twelve years we have been living here. No problem with loose dogs in the immediate neighborhood. Rooster farm is far enough away that we don't hear them.

Leilani doesn't allow loose dogs but so what? They are illegal all over the island. I know a woman in Leilani who brings dog treats with her when she jogs so she can throw them to the roaming dogs. They then don't bite her legs!

My best friend's parents (HPP in the 80's) would trade off when going jogging - one would bike with a large stick and act as guard while the other got their run in. Lol.

running is a total waste of energy. if a person has so much excess energy please do something productive for yourself or society. same goes for working out.

My choice is Fern Acres. That said, your budget is a bit meager, unless you have an income that you can bring with. Jobs are very difficult to find, especially in construction. I always say: RENT FIRST!

Daniel, thanks. We have lived and worked on island before. My husband won't be trying to build as a career. Anything he's doing now is for the sole purpose of us being owner builders when we can afford it. Key word WHEN. We're pretty realistic that this is going to be a long process, but we're pretty into DIY as much as possible and going mortage-free. I am a soon-to-be cert'd teacher with reciprocity in Hawaii.

Just remember, the schools are full of "teach for america" people. You will get hired, but it may take time. I would actually recommend that you go to a recruitment fair on the mainland. I think you'd have just as a good a chance as being hired locally.

I was clearly told by the Hawaii DOE recruiter that unless I was a SPED or Math teacher who was willing to work in a high turnover school that I needed to move to Hawaii to secure a teaching job. That was 9 years ago, but I don't think that has changed much. I got jerked around by the DOE hiring process and instead ended up in Hawaii charter schools, I am at my second charter school and doubt I would ever switch to a DOE school.

As far as subdivisions go, we lived in vacation rentals for between 1 to 6 months each all over Puna and then rented an ocean front condo in Keaukaha for about 2 years before we bought a house in HPP. I am really glad we experienced a wide variety of subdivisions and commutes before buying, we DID NOT end up where we thought we would before we moved here. Access to good internet was a big deal for us, and now that so much of my students' work is turned in through google docs it is even more important, as an educator I don't know if I could function without good internet.

Pam, you must be president of the welcoming committee. Dogs, roosters and thieves are common in Puna? They stole a refrigerator!??! Food too?
