Opinions on Puna subdivisions?
#21
Hi CS. Last week I was speaking to a local HS teacher from Kau that was telling me the stats. She couldn't get hired in her own hometown! because of the "Teach for America" and "mainland recruited teachers". It took her 2 years to get a fulltime job, because she basically had to wait for an opening to open up - as the mainlanders went back home. She ended up in Hilo - which is nuts, because teachers aren't exactly beating the door down to teach in Kau (no offense to the Kau residents).

Teach for America is a program to get teachers "on the ground"

They offer some alternative routes to get those interested in teaching into"high need" districts, this includes places like Chicago & St Louis (had to bring it local for you ;~) and also includes many rural areas like Hawaii County:

unfortunately, Teach for America also puts a lot of under-trained, under-supported aspiring 'teachers' in high-needs schools....when high-needs school REALLY need better-prepared teachers in their schools. It's a vicious feedback loop where achievement can't be improved because of the revolving-door system of putting inexperienced, temporary staff in classrooms.
