Mountain Biking in Puna
#1
Aloha Everyone,

Got a friend coming to visit who is a pretty hard core Mountain Biker. Will be staying down on the Red Road. I see plenty of road bikes down here, but wondering if there are many rides on this side of the Island.

I thought Mana road would be cool, but that is a ways from here. Any leads? Groups or clubs would be super as well.

Mahalo!

..edited to add groups and clubs..

Depends on the tires, as some of the following have some sharp & shelly lava
off of 4 corners (east lighthouse)
end of the road (Hwy130)
out of kaimu
lots of trails off of Stainback & Saddle (Tree Planting trail goes all the way between)
most of Puna coastline
Railroad Rd
Old Govrnmt Beach Rd
Issac Hale
Mac Kenzie
just about any papaya road (ask anyone on the land first, if can)
& Mana is really cool, even if just to Hakalau....but beyond is great for dirt riders

all of the above plus the Volcano National Park, that is if it is open Sad

A note on the hawaii volcanoes national park, technically you aren't supposed to bike except on the approved trails for biking... Rather limited choices unfortunately...
I suggest going to the backcountry office located within the Park to inquire where biking is permitted. Also, while not required, you can get a permit issued so if you are stopped / questioned by a ranger or LEO(law enforcement officer) you can show that it's okay for you to be biking!

Backcountry Office:
8am-4pm

Not my policy, but just a heads up.

Great list Carey! I haven't been to a couple of those yet. Do you do mountain biking Carey?

You and/or your friend should check out Big Island Mountain Biking on Facebook. These folks are pretty hard core and go on lots of rides.

The escape road in the park is legal for mtn bikes. Mostly downhill from Thurston lava tube to Mauna Ulu, about eight miles.

Kulani trails up before the prison. Very cool. Some I had trouble with at 62 and had to stay on the
open road like areas. Made for motocross buy empty during the week. You are suppose to sign in get general permit with DLR in Hilo town and get a map. Worth stopping in and getting the info. It is on Kilauea Ave. Hilo.
If you don't come out it is nice that someone knows you went in. The sign in mail box up there has a sign in and out sheet. ENJOY.
