yup... seems people don't realize the dangerous world we have created where people's immune systems are greatly weakened and bacteria and viruses are are greatly stronger than ever before.

any one see any numbers or test results posted? what defines "safe" ... us geeks need the numbers before going for a swim .... grin
the trib article states the victim cut his leg inbound to the pond... entered the pond with a fresh wound - "missed the signage" .... so do we now need bigger print or a fresh wound inspection before the dip. still leaves the vector for the other 6 cases reported last month un explained....

I don't think our immune systems are weakened. It's more of the paranoid people buying all this antibiotic soap and quadruple action bacteria killer and use it on Everything and ANYTHING.... What these people don't realize is they are just making these antibiotics less effective on this planet. These soaps and saves should be used sparingly. You should also know if you're healthy and take showers and somewhat clean... You won't have a problem or shouldn't have a problem.
Most people don't realize that if you are not going to a public place like a hospital than you shouldn't have to worry about this bacteria growing in your home. Hence, if you not sick, and clean...your gonna be ok. It's the other people that are not and say you took the bus and sat in some person seat that hasn't taken a shower in a few months. When you kill the bad bacteria you are also killing all the GOOD bacteria as well. Granted Hawaii is at a higher risk for growing bacteria but let's not blow it out of perportion.

Actually if you were to look at almost anything in hawaii with a microscope you would find staph on it! Its just that common. Most people even harbor staph inside their bodies without realizing any negative effects. It's when your immune system is compromised that you notice a difference and feel "sick" from the staph that is and was there. Obviously staph isn't the only problem, theres bacilli, other bacteriums, fungi, and viruses to worry about as well. But you're right Eric - no need to freak out about it. If you clean yourself and eat healthy and excercise then it's very unlikely you'll run into serious issues - there are exceptions.

Nearly every visitor we've had from the mainland in the last 6 years has, sadly, gotten a staph infection. Not necessarily from the warm pond, just from any cut or abrasion. We help them to disinfect it immediately and they do, but invariably it leads to staph, and to the clinic, and to a round of antibiotics. I've never had it, but as I said, almost all our visitors get it. Seems to have something to do with the flora and fauna of a totally new environment and in a climate that is conducive to tropical-type infections.
