At 90 an axis deer would be as lethal as a cow or any other object. I've seen what happens when 90 meets cow. The cow wins. It is at least recognizable as having once been a cow. The driver not so much.

At speeds of 80-90 the car is covering ground way faster than the reaction time of the driver can possibly keep up with. By the time the driver realizes something or someone is in the road it is too late to avoid it. For example: livestock, a hitchhiker, a dog, road debris, someone changing a flat tire, clueless tourist who is crossing the road to take a picture of a random lava rock, or a vehicle pulling out from a driveway or pasture access point all would be roadkill before the driver going that fast even had a chance to realize they were there.
The Germans legally drive those sorts of speeds on the autobahn, but those are limited access highways which are highly unlikely to have anything on the list above in the roadway. People who drive those sorts of speeds on the Belt Highway are a fatal accident waiting to happen. It's only fun until someone gets hurt.

having used the euro highway system....
1) the drivers before licensing are tested on "theory" - ie stopping and reaction distance and much much more.... no amatuer hour at 160kph - grin (they need to demonstrate the ability to change a tire or do mechanical inspections of the vehicle as well)
2) wont see any tundra's with rusty tie arms either - want to go 100mph - the entry level would be a newish 75k vw diesel....... I like the bmw's
3) all vehicles merging from the right have right of way - even "t" intersections unless indicated - talking about keeping one on his / her toes
4) slower vehicles stay to the right - passing only allowed on the left.... only allowed in the left lane while passing.....

Maybe not obeying the speed limit 35mph through the construction area? Almost no one has been going 35 through there. I think the 35mph construction area is meaning 35 mph 24/7, whether there is anyone working there or not??

That was my question. I drove through there last night, Hilo bound. There was plenty of traffic and slow speed the other way, but I could have gone 45 or 50 the other way (of course I didn't). I passed the intro sign before I could read all of it. None of the other 35 speed limit signs specified a range of hours, so I'm playing it safe and assuming it means 24/7, even if it's midnight and nobody is there.

You won't get anybody to admit it but allowing 5-10 mph over the limit with impunity is sort of a statement that the limit is 45, not 35. Back when the C&C of Honolulu tried speed enforcement through cameras hidden in vans with the tickets sent through the mail, I recall that people were particularly incensed that they could get multiple tickets without knowing it. On the face if it, the speed limit is the speed limit right? What difference does it make if you got caught once already? Because the ticket is a statement that the normal enforcement standards have been altered, which is not known until tickets start getting handed out. There was a sense of entrapment about the van cams.
