Alert ID - Check Your Neigborhood
#11
It is so bad these days that you can NEVER let you kid walk alone.
That is just so sad. I just heard today a 7 yr old is missing in Kona. Didn't show
up from school. That just makes my blood run cold. Prayers for this child.
So many sick people out there.

Totally agree, Sue Nomie. Thank God the child was found today.

It's a new world we live in (JMO) and one can not be too careful. Keep your children close.

the offenders i worry about are the one's that are not on the registery.the one's are on the registery are being monitored constanly.i have work for a monitor company monitoring s.o.'s for 6yrs.have lived in neighbors with s.o.we have 4kids.its always a good idea too guard your kids.but take it from me.the ones who are not registerd are the ones whom refused to take resposability for there actions.and there chances of reoffending are more then 75%!now with that said let me ask the people of puna this:what would you do if you found somebody living in your neighbor hood who is a registered offender? keep in mind i said i lived in places where there was s.o.i always told my family to be careful but dont judge others cause we are not god.and that has worked for us for years......

I used to work within the state system when I was in Alaska. Not all "sex offenders" are created equal. So while I like to know who they are, I do keep an open mind and look at dates/ages of the offender, etc.

I knew a really nice local Native Alaskan boy who was 18. His girlfriend was 15. Illegal. Age of consent in Alaska is 16. She got pregnant, had a baby. He went to jail and has to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life. They are still married 10 years later (they got married when she turned 18 and he was out of jail). They have a few more kids, nice happy couple.

Edited to add: The reason why I bought up his Native Alaskan status is that for a lot of natives, it is not abnormal to start families young. I know a lot of successful happy couples that had children starting in their teenaged years.

dayna,
you are so right!i worked for miami fl.and boy they have some of the hardest sex offender laws in the u.s.a.and it like everything else has its ups and downs.i seen people who really deserved it and people who just got cought up in the system many many romeo and juliet cases.see miami is a state where you dont need evidence all you need is someone coming out and saying you did this to me.if you have evidence like D.N.A thats good but you dont need it in miami.case and point for the time i worked there i had 14,000 sex cases!out of those cases 60% was people who said "yes he did this to me when i was 9 yrs old" now iam in my 30's and i want something done about it!florida has a no statue if someone gets assaulted at age 9 and under.means they can come out and say they got assaulted any time in there lifes.i have to be honest.when i first took the job i didnt like anybody with these charges!well i had 3 girls and a boy.but as the year's went by and i started to undrstand the law's and making friends with some powerful lawyers it hit me wow theres a lot of sick people out there but theres a lot of people whom got framed as well.age and year that the incident happend yes plays a very big roll in this types of charges.but iam sorry if someone comes out and says "he or she did this to me after 10yrs and you dont have hard proof that this actually took place then i look the other way"! and dont get me wrong iam not saying this is how i feel in every case.put it this way if 3 or more people come out and say "yeah he or she did it to me" then that person has a problem and that case should be looked into.but i seen cases that the person said it happed at 9 yrs old and after 23yrs that person had made a case! all doctor physical in that time spand was checked found to be normal(because they needed to get that done before they got back in school back then florida law)person accused past polygraph test but had to settle with a public deffender cause they ran out of money so he ended up taking a plea. it goes on and on! thats why i got the hell out of there and got a new career! now iam happy. health wise much better.and at peace with myself.i learned one thing if a person is innocent they will go the extra mile to prove it to you.including showing you there evidence which iam not shame to ask for...
thank you puna for letting me share some of my life expierence's with you.fyi(my new career as of 3yrs ago sheriff)

Most child sex abuse is not random; it's relatives. Family and family friends/acquaintance and only a small number of those attacks are reported.

Rob - What Rainbow Alley has said is true if the same one we know of, and there were some real concerns, especially with parents of children in the neighborhood.

There was also (much) debate in our neighborhood about this person and the status of the registration. As for as I have heard (and I called the State myself), this person completed the requirements thing in TX, and was not required to register in the state of Hawaii. The alleged incidents in Hawaii, I do not know what the outcome ever was. There was so much rumor and innuendo around it that it was hard to know what was true and what was not.

I can understand why parents get wound up. Sexual predators of children in your neighborhood is a scary thought.

I stepped away from the debate in our neighborhood when I heard that directly from the State office, and had taken the steps I could do to verify or nullify the rumors. I have no small children, and this person moved out of our neighborhood.

There was no action to actually take other than urging people to be aware (the usual information that the SO program in Hilo provides) of people in general who interact with your kids.

My take on it is anyone should not let your children be alone with people you do not know well or trust... and although most SO crimes are committed by people you do trust, be aware of changes in behavior with your children and if they ask odd questions be aware of what they may be trying to tell you. Pay attention to your children not matter who the adult is! Also if an adult asks odd things of the children, hear that warning bell.

As for the outing, the sex offender list in Hawaii is easy enough to use and there are also national databases that can be used.

and just FYI - I was under the impression that once you were listed as a SO, it required you to register for the rest of your life in whatever state you live in. We found this to be not true in all situations with previously convicted sex offenders. I do not know what triggers the "registration" or "non-registration" part.

And now for the rest of the story!!

The person in question was wrongly accused by a vengeful person and was never convicted of anything !
On the advise of his attorney he took a deal that required him to register as a sex offender. He didn't know that he would have to register ! Had he known that he would have never agreed.

He did 5 years probation,no fines and no jail time.Does this sound like a hard core sex offender or just like school kids that get caught up in this kind of stuff !!!

Now there are websites that post arrest records, mugshots, previous convictions etc. They use these to try to extort money and that is what is going on here !!!

I am not interested in the details, pro or con, on this subject. I am not interested in fact checking anything related to it. Take your concerns to the police. Do not post them further here no matter which side you take. It is all abstract here now anyway.

You may, if you wish, discuss local sites for such warnings, how Hawaii handles such things. But nobody is going to be tried in the court of a community forum here.
