Tivo has an IR blaster that can control most common cable/satellite boxes.
Downside: it's an NTSC device, and there's no firmware update with remote codes for an ATSC tuner, so cable/satellite box as "frontend" will be required.
I had a Tivo for years, definitely a best-in-class device. I think 9thtee.com still makes upgrades/enhancements; I used their install kit to upgrade mine to 320gb (back when that was "lots of space"), everything "just worked".

Good question.
The television signal comes into the TiVo set's built-in tuner through antenna, analog cable, digital cable or satellite (except for the Series3 TiVo, which doesn't support satellite signals).
TiVo Series2 and Series1 DVRs are compatible with any satellite service. Simply connect your existing satellite receiver to your DVR using a serial or IR cable to enable channel changing. These are the only TiVo boxes compatible with a satellite source.
You are welcome to bring it to your house and check it out. If it doesn't work, just bring it back.
