Not Hawaii related, but asking for suggestions

In case you check this, though it looks like you're already on your way:

A few FAVORITES that my spouse and I miss after living in coastal OR:

1. stop at The Green Salmon in Yachats for breakfast and coffee. It is delicious, clean, simple food and baked goods, and awesome coffee. Also, charmingly nautical and rustic (in an authentic way, not corny-tourist).

2. Get sushi at Yuzen's in Seal Rock (just a bit north of Yachats). Nothing beats Ocean sushi in Hilo, but this place is funky-cool.

ooh, also, Yaquina Head lighthouse in Newport.

Since you're English, you'll appreciate the Pelican Inn not far from Muir Woods on 1. If you want a Pahoa-like detour from the Sonoma Coast turn right on 116 toward Guerneville, along the Russian river to Armstrong Grove. Or before that turn right toward Sebastopol to see the town of Bodega and site of Hitchcock's The Birds...So many places...

Another "thank you" from Pam and me. What a trip! It's our last evening in Oregon (we're in Ashland having decided to head inland after two weeks on the coast) and we don't want the trip to end. We still have a few more days together a little further south in California but the scenery and people in Oregon have been very special. The weather has also been OK. Not particularly sunny but we haven't had much rain although today we visited Crater Lake and it snowed, but we both liked that, it made a change!

Oregon is a beautiful state. Though I lived most of my life in Washington in the Seattle/Tacoma area, we had lots of relatives in the Eugene and Portland Oregon areas. So I got down there a lot all my life. One of my favorite motorcycle rides has always been the wonderful Oregon coast.

Aloha Tom and Pam! So good to hear from you! Can you catch an Amtrak train and travel the coastline to Vancouver? Fantastic city with lots of wonderful things to see. We so enjoyed our trip via train (a few times), and even if it's a day trip only, maybe include some wine tasting along the way, or just the train ride back and forth to where you are.

I'm pretty perturbed with my Niners (No one comes close to the glory days of Montana to Clarke/Rice/etc. Ugh! Sorry, OT.), but SFO is a wonderful place to start a day or two journey. More seafood in Washington state perhaps, or a boat trip somewhere, take in Puget Sound (I think it's whale watching over there at this time, too.)?

There are more traveled people here than I, but had to respond to you both. Enjoy your time together, and know you are missed. Ke Akua be with you, and safe travels until your return. Warm aloha to you both. Enjoy!

I am so glad you enjoyed Oregon!
I made my home in the Willamette Valley for 25 years and Oregon can't be beat for scenic beauty, friendly low key people and little surprises around the corner all along the coastline. When I was majoring in geography at the University of Oregon I wanted to write a guide book to the Oregon coast with one long map of the relevant coastline running all along the margin. Enjoy the last part of your trip together Tome and Pam, and welcome home to both of you when you get there.

Glad you are enjoying the vacation in Oregon so much.

I thought about you when I drove my family up Mauna Kea to the top a couple of days ago. Wow! what a drive that is!! My 15 yr. old Toyota 4-Runner went up there at a whopping 10 mph. At one point, I thought we were going to be slipping down the mountain because the car was maxing out at 5mph. Needless to say, I'll never do that again to my good ole car [Wink]

Thanks again, everyone. I've been back a week now and am still in Oregon mode. Pam and I loved the place so much and we're already planning the next trip back there, hopefully sometime early next year.

For those interested, the trip started in the Santa Barbara area and the intention was to drive all the way along Hwy 1 up to Astoria on the Columbia river and we managed to do this. It was a great scouting trip but not sure I'll drive that far again. We put 2800 miles on the rental car by the time we got back and although we saw so many wonderful places too much time was spent driving. But at least we know where to visit next.

The trip was: Carpinteria -> Cambria -> Pacifica -> Gualala -> Crescent City -> Yachats -> Astoria -> Lincoln City -> Ashland -> Redding -> Monterey -> Carpinteria.

Without a doubt the two highlights of the trip were Yachats and the hotel in Astoria, but there were no bad places. At the bottom of the list was Crescent City, but that was due to the hotel restaurant, not the place itself, and we were only there for one night. Gualala is another place I want to revisit, but trying to put that together with revisiting Yachats and Astoria is difficult - can't believe the distances we drove! Driving through the redwood forests but also staying on Oregon beaches (and rivers) just can't be beat!

Anyway, thank you all for your suggestions. We had a blast and I now have another place I want to visit again and again!

So, did you get to the Green Salmon in Yachats or Cape Perpetua? I used to be a ranger there. Good memories.
