living wage is what you make it - it doesnt get done by blogging all day. My first ten years - I never took out more than 1k a month.....

neither does changing top ceo pay - one needs to be "out there among them" before making that call - as much as I agree that some pay scales are obscene - that really is the share holders call

small biz ceo pay.... ever been to the bank to put your house on the line to cover a slow period and payroll? a mile in a small business owners shoes may lead to some insight.

How did unionization work out for the sugar workers?
Pretty good if you got a living wage for forty years with free medical, put your kids through college, and now have social security based on a union wage versus minimum. Of course we could still have sugar here if the workers were paid 100 pesos a day ($2.50) and your taxes subsidized the company, and we did away with environmental laws. Then we could compete in the world sugar market, and you could compete with other third world countries for tourist dollars.
You as a consumer would benefit because you could get a Hershey bar for four quarters instead of a dollar, and Hershey CEO John P. Bilbrey could make twenty million a year rather than the paltry 12.3 he makes now. Don't delude yourself into thinking the stockholders would see any of the savings in the form of increased dividends because they have Hershey stock in their IRA. Stockholders are being played also, they only own the company risks not the rewards. (but that's another thread)

The crazy laws we have about electricians and plumbers were pushed by contractors not the workers. I cannot hire an electrician I have to hire a contractor, in fact an electrician can't even do his own electrical work legally.

What about the customers?
Wal Mart is not the United way and neither is a Union.
If the workers at Wal Mart unionize they won't be doing it so the customers can continue to get necessities like a trampoline for $209.00, they will be doing it because they might like to stay a week with their family at nice vacation cottage for $594 plus tax, or maybe just buy a tire so their jalopy will pass inspection, or maybe, just maybe get off food stamps.

So ... surviving on minimum wage means you need really cheap housing ... like something unpermitted ... on a "privately-owned public road" ... where you "cheat" on your property taxes ...

Nothing to see here, move along.

Not to mention, you would think the people in front of Walgreens would try to find work after two years. I realize Walgreens probably enjoys the free publicity but I personally am tired at looking at them everyday.

Well maybe some of the LOWER primates ...

The founding fathers HATED the corporations and the banksters. They KNEW. This country was founded on the rejection of the upper class control of everything.

But the corporations have the dumbers primates among us well trained now.

The transfer of wealth from us to them in just the last 5 years has been trillions -- all done in this "bad economy."

But ... not to worry. We're busy beating up on each other. We're busy MAKING SURE that our low wage earner get even lower wages. So that the billionaires can get extra billions.

(Actually "we're" even busier now helping Wall Street take the middle class apart. -- Union jobs? These "union" people wanted to be a part of the middle class? No way Jose!)

This topic in wandering off into that maze of incomprehensibility so common on mainland forums.

Bring it back to Puna or see it go away.

Assume the best and ask questions.

By chance if minimum wage was raised here in Puna, or the state of Hawaii. What should minimum wage be moved too?. See in 35 other states who are asking for $15.00 an hour don't have as high a cost of living as we do here. If these $25.00 an hour wages were having to be paid then you would see a change in how these places hired?. They may want someone with the right ethics again, or want to hire a few instead of many part-time workers. The Burger kings, Kfc, and mcdonalds of America would have to raise there prices so much, you may have to go to Black rocks again and tip the waitress who makes $3.55 an hour. I sometimes feel bad for the kids of today WHO our fed this crap from birth, and if they are the lucky ones they will die at 84 years old serving this crap to their next generation. GO GMO, GO FASTFOOD. what re-tard-ment?.

At $25.00/hour minimum wage, most local small businesses would go OUT of business. I think that is not really good for our local families.
