This seems to be quite a complicated issue. Makes me lean more towards homeschooling than ever before - I had no idea about some of the things being taught.

There are lots of kids out there who aren't getting parented. These are the underserved kids that are the most at-risk. It's all very convenient to say "But not MY [white, middle-class, 2-parent-household] child!" Asking to pull programs like these because of personal outrage and prudery is just one more example of white privilege at work.

I hear all these cruel, classist, racist complaints about poor people of color on EBT having lots of babies - well, would classes like this have helped? Or are you just subconsciously aware that the very denial of services and adequate education continues to keep the lower class mute, ignorant, and in their place so your comfortable seat of middle-class choice and privilege will continue to be safely in place?

The Jesus-myth and all the associated malarkey that goes along with religion should not be taught in schools, it should remain in the church where they can use indoctrination and propaganda to trick young minds into the fact that sex is only for pro-creation, whenever the husband demands it.

Remember the Bush Era? and teaching kids about Abstinence? Than they would bill the school big bucks and of course they wouldn't learn anything except a bunch of BS about god and whatnot. Oh and don't show kids how to use a condom or give them one. It's like giving the keys to car (they said)! hahaha

If parents instilled a sense of self respect and respect for others in their children our society would be much better in the long run.
Unfortunately many parents elect to use "electronic babysitters" in order to ease the burden of raising their children, thus we see the myriad problems which ensue when such children behave in ways our communities find unacceptable.

Nearly every crime can be traced back to a child who has no self respect, and by extension, no respect for others.

Teen sexuality is nothing new, and those who have respect for themselves as well as others will be more inclined to behave responsibly and will hopefully ensure that they view their bodies as being special - not something to be taken for granted.

The more educated our children are, the better choices they will make.
Many scientific studies show that educated females tend to avoid pregnancy until they are able to properly care for and nurture those babies that they do have.

That said, I think that sex ed in schools need to be acceptable to the parents of the students who will be attending these classes.

Sadly, from my personal experience, our public schools are little more than "pre-prisons" where our children are exposed to all manner of illegal and unacceptable behaviors. As previously mentioned, many parents are failing their children miserably, and by extension failing society as well.

The schools on the big island are not like "preprisons" at all! My son was at Imiloa, and then at the awards ceremony yesterday- all day for the island-wide science fair. His teacher was right there beside him!
Giving up her own weekend time for the Keiki! Can't say enough about the great teachers here.

Well, since Bob McDermott is wrong on virtually everything, it sounds like it probably is a worthwhile program.
