I don't think it's a great idea by any means, but as a comparison:

The Obama Administration is proposing to remove 8 subsidies to the oil and gas industry amounting to $38.5 billion over the next 10 years or roughly $4 billion a year). Keep in mind this is by no means all of the subsidies the oil and gas industry receives:

There are about 4 million babies born in the US every year. At $500 for each savings account, that's $2 billion a year.

Half of what the strongest, most powerful industry in America receives as corporate welfare every year from the proposed cuts to their current subsidies.
