Homosteading "The 19th Parallel

There is also a book called Don't pet the Sharks: Advice, Oberservations and Snark from the Big Island. It is a fun read.

Quote from the books. "When a shark attacks, punch it in the nose as hard as you can. I got this from an older, experienced, one-armed diver named Lefty."

The way he puts it, it seems like there is a huge homo community, like the FL Keys.... This book was also based in 2006, so maybe its changed, IDk..

Well there isn't a "huge" homo community but there is one which is kind of a big deal considering the population of the entire island.

There is a huge amount of homo tourism and retirement as well as homosexuals who move to Puna because not only is the state known for being gay friendly but Puna is known as a a "live and let live" type of place. So it makes sense.

I read all of the above except the Shark book. Gay, lesbian or straight most Puna transplants beat to the tune of a different drummer. It's what I love the best about east side of the Hawaii island. Miss it so much.

I understand the northern types like minnesota, alaska and the like wanting to move to Hawaii, but not the floridians - never having been to the sunshine state - what dont I know?

I lived in St. Petersburg Florida for 5 years. I liked it, it had beautiful beaches and nice restaurants and plenty of things to do. However, t could be a pretty conservative once you got of of the main metropolitan areas. Out in the middle of the state it could be downright scary. Lots of mouth-breathers. Overall, I I also didn't find people to be particularly friendly there.

It does have some things in common with Hawaii but it is very different overall. I much prefer Hawaii to Florida.
