Why don't they work on it at night?

I think also that the work they're doing right now is so close to the edge of the actual road it might be dangerous for the work crews at night, but even so, why do this paving during the evening rush hour? It's brainless. Is whoever schedules this stuff aware of the backups they're causing? Or does it actually matter to them?

The last few times I have driven into Hilo in the morning, they were working the makai side. When driving back in the afternoon, they work the mauka side. Completely backwards from what seems logical.

That's my observation too, cwoods, but also wanted to reply to something ericlp wrote earlier about people going really slowly through this point because they were gawking. That may have been the case when ericlp drove through, but this evening there were several people, including two cops with their backs to the traffic, literally stepping out into the road. There was no way you *could* drive more than 5-10 mph through there. You couldn't drive around them, it'd mean going into the opposing lane with relatively fast oncoming traffic, so for everyone's safety that was the only option. No wonder the backup is so large.

I got stuck in the bad traffic the last two nights now. Last night was worse. I teach an after school chess class at E. B. DeSilva Elementary in Hilo on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. Got home to HPP tonight, and got a call from my son in law, and his car broke down, and he limped it to Keaau parking lot. Loaded up jacks, jackstands, and tools, and back to Keaau. Helped him fix his car, and got to drive through it again.

Wish they could come up with a better way. Las Vegas, they do the road work at night, at least in the summer, due to the heat. Wish we could get a second route to Hilo. Guess that's a dead horse.

What time did you have to drive through it a second time, Jon? I'm seriously considering changing my work schedule (an option not open to most I suspect) but am not sure when the traffic jam starts to clear out right now. I imagine it's quite late.

The traffic was backed up on 130 and 11 to the intersection at 5:30ish tonight. It has gotten way out of hand.

It also rains a lot at night, and that might be a safety issue as well.

Scheduling is designed to make the roadwork "visible", this way people feel like they're getting something for their tax dollars, and everyone is happy when it's over.

Not sure how this works with highway 11, though; they work a few days, then disappear for a few weeks, then come back for a day or two...
