Mililani Trask Files to Run for OHA Seat
Mililani Trask, an advocate for Hawaiian sovereignty who has lately been pursuing geothermal interests, has filed papers to run for the Office of Hawaiian Affairs.
Trask is running in what may be a large primary field. Nine candidates have pulled papers (including sitting trustee Rowena Akana); five have already filed like Trask, a former OHA trustee.
The race is nonpartisan and open to voters statewide. The top finishers will advance to the general election.
This is a true warrior for all people, not just kanaka maoli. Please support Mililani Trask in her effort to bring OHA back to what the intent of OHA should be. If you google her name, her accomplishments speak for themselves.
The ironic thing is a good portion of kanaka maoli do not vote. OHA's elections are open to ALL voters due to Freddie Rice's lawsuit an age ago. Please vote for the OHA races as it affects all of us. Mahalo.
JMO.

I was flying home from work in Honolulu. When it was time to get off the woman across from me pulled her bag out of the overhead bin. I fell on my head and shoulder. The woman did not say sorry, she gave me stink eye and said damn haole. I asked my associate, who is Hawaiian, what was that about. She said that was Miliani Trask, she does not like haoles. So I will never vote for her or recommend her.

Odd ... since Trask has haole blood herself.

The OHA is essentially a stand alone corporation for the aboriginal Hawaiian people. It has an elected board to manage Hawaiian homelands for the Hawaiian people. It originally required full Hawaiian but was challenged in court.
"Justices ruled in favor of Rice on 23 February 2000 forcing OHA to open its elections to all residents of the State of Hawai#699;i regardless of ethnicity."
However, the OHA devotes everything to management and finances from Hawaiian homelands only for authenticated aboriginal Hawaiians, until that time they are returned to the Hawaiian people as a nation or kingdom. They receive royalties from the ceded lands as well as now owning all mineral rights and royalties for any geothermal plant built on Hawaiian homelands.

It was probably Faye Hanohano, not Mililani Trask. You know, all us Hawaiians look alike. (Just kidding! Aloha to you. [ ])
If there is ever a "war" to be had, it would be people like Mililani Trask I'd want on my side. Do not agree with everything she states as opinion (legal and otherwise), however, she is a warrior. No question. That's why the United Nations respects her mission for indigenous people. Doesn't hurt that she is a lawyer, and comes from a strong family base.
Her home is here in Ola'a. She is part "haole". (Heck, we all are, unless anyone can prove 100% bloodline which is rare). I would like to see our island represented by the likes of Mililani Trask at this point, given OHA has more money than the State of Hawaii!
Time for OHA to be turned around, they have done nothing of substance for Puna yet. Millions of dollars in geothermal royalties, and not one of the Trustees can say where the money went! Give me a break. Time for change.
Pahoated, if only OHA & DHHL would stop the damn politics, and get to serving the people, and not just Hawaiians. JMO.

Some misconceptions developing in these statements above. For Puna, OHA is working with DLNR to fence off forest reserves to try to bring back more endemic birds and restore lands plus OHA manages several Hawaiian homeland properties.
The legal ruling for geothermal funds only applies to geothermal plants on Hawaiian homelands. The stupid media is showing pictures of PGV with this news, typical media confusion. PGV is on private land and in fact, only leases a small plot in the middle of a large private property. As for the geothermal royalties PGV has paid so far, a share goes to the state, a share goes to OHA and a share goes to Hawaii county. The balances of these funds are fairly easy to look up. In Hawaii county, they have been sitting and piling up, now being dispersed to buy properties around PGV, buy some monitors, and finance a health study.
As for what constitutes a "native Hawaiian", that was defined in 1921:
"defined as “any descendant of not less than one-half part of the blood of the races inhabiting the Hawaiian Islands previous to 1778.” This means, you must have a blood quantum of at least 50 percent Hawaiian. This requirement remains unchanged since the HHCA’s passage in 1921."
This is similar to native American nations, although some of those are allowing 1/16th blood line. Also, the operation of OHA is similar to BIA (Bureau of Indian Affairs) with about the same feelings expressed towards the agency. As with BIA, the charter is not for "all the people". The charter is for natives and their land. The idea is that what is good for the natives will be good for the general population. However, the general population does not factor into OHA operations at all.

Maybe i'm out of line here...
But is it not hypocritical to both claim sovereignty and seek public office at the same time?
Not really trying to judge here - maybe thats what it takes for her to "get anything done" - mostly just curious on others opinions here.

Like the hundreds of vacant "farm lots" behind Makuu?
Open to anyone of Hawaiian descent ... who survives the waiting list ... and has enough money to build a fully permitted home ... because the rights of sovereign native people must be secondary to the license/permit/fee/inspection regime?
Last time I drove through there, I could count the occupied lots on my fingers.

I had the displeasure of meeting Mililani Trask many years ago and unless she has changed in the last 20 years her views align closer to Faye.
Thank you for letting me know she is running, this will be the first time in decades I vote for OHA to make sure she doesn't get a seat.

Interesting. You don't vote for OHA, but will this time to make sure she doesn't get in. And people wonder why we "assimilated Hawaiians" think the way we do on occasion. It's that Western mentality we've learned.
So who are you going to vote for, and why (besides the initial intent)? Just curious. JMO.
Pahoated, I understand your points. Thank you. However, given the MILLIONS the State, County and OHA have received from geothermal royalties alone, Puna has seen very little compared to the income, as the host community. JMO.
