Welcome to Puna, Mike and Paul! With your budget, I would say you have made the right choice, there is still plenty of affordable housing available here.
You can still swim when you live here, you just have to drive a bit further. The real estate market seems to be picking up (in my non-expert opinion) so it could be a good time to be an RE agent here. There are already plenty (800 on the Big Island, I think) but there's always room for more good ones, i.e. ones that will actually make an effort to earn their money. Check out HPP, it's a great place to live and forget about the Dallas snow.

Hey all,
Yeah, my name isn't all that important either. I'm from West Virginia, wife's from California. The Army is done giving me the green weenie, wife's still taking it as we speak. She got diabetes from out of date and out of sequence vaccinations and we're coming out for the food and the weather to try to turn it around. So, we're on our way. Just waiting for her hitch to end. She'll end up (hopefully) with a nice VA check and I'm gonna fight to get some from old Uncle Sugar, too. Why? Because F*#% Uncle Sugar, that's why! Ha! Before vets come out in masse about me clogging up the VA system, I signed my name in blood just like you. Anything wrong with me? Aside from nightmares and a sour, cynical disposition, nope! Don't get me wrong, I like to work, but the economy sucks, I'm collecting from the VA as much as possible, for #1 (or household 6, the wife). Besides, I can't not be doing something productive... kinda drives me nuts. It's really like Lt. Dan. Whole family serves and then you go and give'em EVERYTHING YA GOT only to get CHOPPED OFF AT THE KNEES! Only no Forrest to help pull me up and out. (Good days/bad days... this is a good one, I'm feelin' sociable) No Job, 25K in the hole (Can you say bankruptcy?), pissed off, betrayed, and generally not giving a F*%@! That's me. My plan was to retire here, well enough off to live without being a tax burden, but the Big Green Weenie had other plans. So piss on it. Coming out without a plan, and really don't care who likes it and who doesn't. Sometime's life just ****s on people and then they stop caring. Others go bat**** crazy. I know I'm going crazy, but just don't care enough to try and fight it. THANKFULLY, my ol lady is an Angel, so I stay in line (for the most part) for her.  Why not, ya know? people live off the system all over the country, some never worked a day in their lives popping out rug rats every 9 months. Me? I like work and I can do it from sun up to sun down. Even like it. Just can't lick boot no mo. Just thru waiting on the conditions to be right to make the move. on a side note,I will drink beer but prefer the shine. If you have, please help a budding alcoholic. If no have, well... maybe a niche market. The wife has 2 Bachelor's so, unless my bad influence just totally overwhelms her, she should be a productive member of the community.
Oh, yeah, I'm white and have no shame for it. The woman is latin of the mexican persuasion. I'm not racist, and have no tolerance for it. and finally, these really are my thoughts. I like to write for entertainment, but always gotta tell the truth. I'ts taken on a darker tinge lately, but that's life. If you get offended by what I write, please write back with your name address and phone number... just kidding. I like to bitch, argue, rant, rave, drink, gamble, smoke, raise hell and what have ya. I got all kinds of bad habits. Some like me, some don't. I figure best to find out who they are right away. Never been the most popular guy, ain't tryin' to start. Hidee-Ho Neighbors!

Super8, welcome, and thank you, as well as your wife, for your service. 11B here. I too have anger issues, but it's nothing that good ass whooping can't quell. Win or lose. I guess it's called "survivor's guilt" and it sucks. Don't worry about getting your just desserts from the government - they give themselves unearned increases in pay all the time.

Delta9r, Grandfather was an 11B, father 12B and I was 153A. For a short time. Ass whooping? You offerin? haha. Guilt? I don't feel guilty for nothin. I gave em my best and in the end, was cut down by a civilian with an axe to grind. CoC knew it, and hung me out to dry. To me, just as gutless, if not just as culpable. They can all go eat ****. That being said, I don't have anger issues, either. I have impetus to make sure they eat **** with a shovel.

Not so sure about the shine, but from time to time some finds its way around. A friend's dad made some awesome lilikoi swipe. It was like champagne, with tiny bubbles. He's not doing so well these days.
I'm more of a beer drinker, as the hard stuff will land me in trouble since I don't know when to quit.
My dad was a cook in the Korean thing and his dad was 11B during the first world war but ended up getting run over by a bus in Cairo, Egypt in 1964. Mom's dad rode with Teddy Roosevelt's Rough Riders and went to school with Duke Kahanamoku.
I was expected to go into the US Army, and that's what I did...

Hey, everybody! My name is Anne Marie. I'm originally from Queens/Long Island, New York, but my husband, Gaetano, and I now live on the Gulf coast of Florida. I'm an occupational therapist and artist, my husband is currently working part-time at Publix (a grocery store.) I have always loved Hawai'i since visiting there in 2001. I'll be celebrating my 10 year anniversary and renewing my vows next year, so I will be going back to Hawai'i for this reason. Because of the economic conditions and the difficulty for my husband to find work, and seriously looking at the future we are not seeing the possibility of a comfortable retirement like our parents had. I am looking to MAJORLY scale down to the point of half-way living off the grid (definitely need internet) and growing some of my own food to cut bills. This will be a big step for us, requiring a lot of soul searching. We will be checking out the Puna area to possibly make a move to. I am a self-sufficient/plan for the future type person. I love to travel, try new things, love to make new friends. I'm down-to-earth and pretty much let a lot of needless BS in life slide off my back. I'm looking to connect, hence joining all you good people here! I am of Italian/German descent, my husband is 100% Italian from Sicily and...get this...he lived on the slopes of Mt. Etna, an active volcano!! We can't get away from them, lol. Hey, Hawaiians, I am a proud person (I hate the word 'haole') of European descent. I will teach you how to make a great lasagna and you can teach me how to make great lomi salmon! Deal?? :-D Any and every suggestion is welcome as far as areas where to live, great joints to eat at, fun and interesting people to get to know is appreciated. If you love gardening/self-sufficiency/travel/languages/learning new things/art then you and I will get along great! I believe in making alliances in a neighborhood, getting to know our neighbors, accepting each other's shortcomings and embracing each other's likenesses and differences. I don't like head cases, druggies, narcissistic people who think they know it all and liars. I like spiritual, open-minded, happy, loving life, laughing type people...people that are a joy to have in your life. Okay, now that I made my intro sound like an intro for a web dating service in all I'm a friendly and happy person to get to know. I have some great ideas about providing a free donations only run outpatient clinic (physical, speech and occupational therapy) for the poor on the island when we finally settle in...a dream of mine for the last 13 years. Aloha Pipgal: Mahalo and welcome to PunaWeb. Given your interests/skills, you should definitely connect with the Pahoa Community Medical Clinic upon arriving in Pahoa. They are located in the Pahoa Marketplace (aka Malama Mktplc) and perform many services for the poor and emergency basics for everyone. At this time don't think any of your skills are represented.
Good luck in your search for land in Puna - you seems likely to fit in well...

Hello everyone! I've been a punaweb member for a short time and have been soaking up all the excellent information in that time and appreciate all the helpful posts.
My name is Carl and I currently reside in California. I've lived in various states in my life (partly due to the Army, partly because of family) and have traveled throughout the tropics (Caribbean, Pacific and Australia). I've always been drawn to that weather and lifestyle. My hope was to be able to live full time in that type of environment but didn't think it would be attainable until I found information about BI real estate.
So in this last year my plans have been focused on getting to the BI within a few years. I'd like it to be next month but I need to be smart about it, so I'm paying things off, researching everything and working on getting my boss on board (I work from home so it wouldn't be much of a change for them).
Anyway, thanks for all the helpful information and I hope to be meeting you in person one day. I'll buy the first round!
