I am semi-retired, but work from home doing some IT consulting for large mainland companies.
I try to avoid going to Hilo more than once every 2-3 weeks.
Most items I am now buying thru amazon (prime account) and they just get delivered to me.
I utilize the subscribe and save feature quite a lot.
That saves a lot of time, gas, and headaches.
I have even bought new tires from amazon. Saves a bundle over local pricing.

I live in Hawaiian Shores Rec and I moved here because it had all the things I wanted like paved roads, access to cable, city water and the development has a pool and tennis courts which we use occasionally.
To be honest, while I have come to love Puna, it wasn't my first choice, Kona was, but there is no way I could afford the real estate there so we decided on Puna.
Hope this helps.

We enjoy living in Orchidland because it is convenient to Hilo but you get three acres for the price of one acre in HPP. Elevation is perfect for us - not too hot, not too cold. We can grow almost everything here. We love our eclectic neighborhood and very friendly neighbors. Main roads are gradually getting paved.

HPPguy, where are you? I'm on one of the "L" streets.

Does Orchidland have fast internet access ? (like 10MBPS or higher) ?
Since we are staying our first 3 months in Orchidland, I am curious.

Rocketman: Tried to email you a few times. Maybe you have an error in your email or it's not working. Keeps bouncing.
Orchidland has DSL, but if good luck finding an open port. If you are not on DSL and just bought a lot in Orchidland you should probably write off high speed internet that you are currently use too.
The only thing available. Is satellite, Cell and some microwave connections that is iffy depending on what lot you got. If you are looking for unlimited 10MBPS (good luck!). I thought about buying an investment lot in Orchidland as I like the area but with no REAL internet options ... It's probably not for me. Tho if you can get by on 3 - 25 Gigs a month, cell or Sat can work for you!

Tho at 25 Gigs you'll be paying about 125 a month for it.

When you get there, ask your neighbors what they are using. I'm sure there's some other archived posts about this also.

I am on Manini, RocketMan. Nice, quiet little street, I really like it.
With Netflix and Vudu,Music and gaming, I probably blow through 100Gigs a month easy.

There may be some options. Look on the other threads, but this is partly why I ended up buying a house in Hilo. With my kids, the water infrastructure, cable tv, internet, good schools etc. just became really important. You might look at Hawaiian Beaches? The bus goes down in there and they have water I think. Not sure about better internet. Some parts of Orchidland on the Hwy also have cable tv and highspeed internet through that - I think.
