Mark, with the new Sonny Boy SMA inverters, you can now have SOME backup with grid-tied (not conditioned, so not recommended for electronics (that are not protected with sine wave output UPS type protection)
This has been a major hurdle for us to get grid tied (as our elec bill is low & ROI is not really great...but having a power back-up in failure is REALLY enticing... esp for refrigeration (used to live in an area that was "end of the power line" that went through a forest first...tree contact was a constant part of life & sometimes tree contact ended with no power for a few days & spoilt food,)[:0]
