This is for the local mom and pop eateries, not the chains like KFC or the Burger Kings.
Th best Poke or any kine.
For Puna or Hilo
Good and bad comments welcome but lets keep it civil .
I enjoy Emma's in Shipmans.
They have amazing Mexican and are locally run company and in the back they make the very popular tortilla's and chips
Also Candy's Drive Inn as they open at 4:30am and serve nice n greasy local grinds,if you have a job in kona and headed that side over the saddle,we always stop in.
A new bakery in shipmans where Verna's used to be is called The Bread Box .
I love this hole in the wall bakery.
Great selection of breads and pastries and day old even better
Ok your turn folks.

I liked Emma's but pretty sure they are out of business.

Oh, I got all ready to go try Emma's, as I like Mexican food. Isn't Bread Box the bread makers that were at the Keaau Market, and then moved to a shop kitty corner to the Market closer to McDonald's? I do like Lucie's Mexican place in Hilo pretty well.

there was another restaurant in Emma's old spot--local food with a little bit of Mexican. I was there several months ago, it might be gone, too.

Poke to Your Taste. Nothing like making your own poke bowl the way you like it! For breakfasts there's a little place across Kilauea from Lucy's (maybe a few doors down). I can't recall the name, but definitely a mom and pop operation that makes you feel you are putting your money back into the community. Royal Siam Restaurant just up from the Hilo market has good Thai and it seems to be an all in the family operation. Mountain View Bakery does have employees, but it's still a small town local style place for sure (get there early cause they sell out quick!) Pretty sure I could go on all day. There are more places to check out than a person has meals to eat, especially for people like me who like to cook at home.

Mike

Oh my bad on Emma's - Been awhile since i ate there.
The Bread Box is by Alibi tavern.Former shipmans from the cane haul days.
Papa Aldo's used to be where the pawn shop is if i recall correctly, and verna's had the best banana cream pie evah. But Aunty Verna has passed RIP .
The Verna's down by Kens house of pancakes, still has the greasiest tasty heart clogging double cheeseburger around town.
