Yes, the island of Waialua.
It's an area on Oahu, not an island.
they think people spraying chemicals in HAZMAT suits is ok to eat?
I lived in apple country on the mainland in the 1980's. The apple crop, regular non-GMO apples, are sprayed 27 times a year by workers in moonsuits, sitting inside enclosed tractor cabs with filtered air systems. An apple a day...
Think that's bad? Check out how often non-GMO potato crops are doused with soil fungicides to keep from rotting while growing in the ground.
Cows will refuse GMO corn if given a choice
I've fed cows. They are not picky eaters. I think anyone else who has ever actually fed a cow would find this very hard to believe.

I agree. That's why GMO labeling is so important. Educated people want to know what's in their food and are capable of making informed decisions when information is available. Let free market dynamics decide the future of GMO. What are the big Chemical companies afraid of? An informed public? Why do Chemical companies spend millions to defeat GMO labeling legislation?
Don't force people to consume GMO by hiding it's existence.

Personal anecdote trumps scientific consensus. Easy logical trap to fall in to and you did.
You've got it bacwards - the anti-GM crowd want to force their views on the rest of us, not the other way around. They want to remove choice.

I started this post because I found this persons perspective interesting. Here is another interesting statement.
"However, what has changed is that certain people have started to attack it. Agriculture is essentially a tapestry of what makes Hawaii unique. A small group of people, who don’t share our plantation and farming roots, have decided to unravel at the threads of what made us who we are by using fear and misinformation. Local people have never experienced such kind of tactics and stand at a crossroad as to how to handle this."

I had to laugh at this. I've fed cows. The last thing they do is sniff their food. Turn their noses up at corn?
That is funny. Worthy of a Gary Larson (Far Side) cartoon.

Again, we will need to agree to disagree.
I am not allergic to soy. At this point I have been blessed to not have any allergies to anything. My doctor told me I had some polyps which came back negative, and some stomach lining deterioration which he said was probably from taking aspirin, though I rarely take aspirin. He gave me a prescription, which I took twice, and stopped taking now that I realized it was the Soy Milk making me sick.
I think people mix up topics when talking about hazards of GMO's. There are many parts to argue..
1- Is genetically modified foods bad for you ?
2- Is the chemicals they use harmful ?
3- Are the practices of companies like Monsanto ethical ?
1- My family has always had a garden. My grandfather used to splice lemon and lime trees together. I was amazed as a kid. This is a natural way to modify food. (Think seedless watermelons, grapes etc)
Than there is the other story, like adding DNA from a fish into a tomato or something of the like. Or adding the BT Toxin into the DNA of the corn so that when bugs eat it it kills them. I mean, can we honestly sit here and think that will not have any affect on YOU ? You cant compare the two. One is natural, one is not.
2- I think it goes without saying, or should, that pesticides, insecticides are NOT good for you. If you disagree please, we probably have no words for each other. That being said, I want the ability to know if my foods are GMO, organic, convential etc.. I have the human right to know what I am consuming, because I do not want to eat poison.
3- Monsanto is one of the most unethical crooked companies in the world. This alone should be reason enough to not want to support GMO foods. Forget the "is it good for you or not" debate. The unethical practices of the company alone, should make any human not want to buy their products. The revolving door with government positions, bought laws and rules, destruction of local farmers, crooked tactics, unwillingness to cooperate with labeling demands...every aspect of the company is hideous.
You can debate all you want, and as I mentioned, neither one of us is going to change each others minds, but, any one of those given reason would make me not support GMO's, and all three together make me very passionate about it.

When the evidence shows I was wrong, I change my mind.
What do you do?

navigation - as a pup I was taught one never really becomes a good navigator.... but after a few thousand fixes - one gets a pretty good handle on the margin of error
Its the one thing I like about getting older
getting back to gmo - I'd like a label one small symbol would do.

When these people truly go GMO free is the day when they “might” be a bit more credible. Until then, they should pay more attention to what they are using in their daily lives and how it was brought to them by a farmer using GMOs.

I guess using this logic our Founding Fathers would have had to cast away all their british made weaponry, clothing, livestock, etc. and started over from scratch before they could have attempted a "credible" revolution - in the eyes of this ?peculiar? source of yours.
