There is a group of people in Hawaii trying to change the building code.
This could be a lesson for them !!
Experts: Strict building codes saved lives in powerful Chile earthquake
Chile has over the years implemented strict building codes and rigorous evacuation plans, experts said.
"People are more familiar with them," Bellini said of the temblors. "They, in general, know what to do as part of their daily lives, plus the building codes are fairly well-enforced in Chile. It's in their culture."
In February 2010, about 500 people died when an 8.8-magnitude earthquake hit. That quake was so violent, it moved one whole Chilean city about 10 feet west.
One month earlier, the importance of strict building codes was underscored when Port-au-Prince, Haiti, was hit by a magnitude-7.0 earthquake that leveled 70% of the Haitian capital's structures and killed at least 230,000 people.

Chile has actually done a lot of innovation with building methods, like restrained masonry. to make something affordable that can deal with the big quakes

Almost as if the Chilean codes were for "safety", and the USian ones are for "profit"...

They've already changed the code to IBC from UBC. What does the new group want to change it to?

Restrained masonry? I dealt with that when I was a teenager. Not so much now.
I better do some investigation, maybe learn something.

Your statement is so broad in regards to a a group of people trying to change the building code. Could you be a little more specific about what they are trying to change, and if an organized group what their name is?

Again? I thought they already made it more expensive/difficult a couple of years ago.

Look at the pictures on their home page. The solar array would not survive an earthquake and that tarp dining are would be blown away in a hurricane. The codes are in place because of best practice learned over time.
We have no shelters to go to so our homes need to be designed to survive the worst possible disasters.

Throwing the bullchit flag here. The codes are in place because some people somewhere sat down and decided, for everyone else, what is acceptable building material. It's different if you live in a high rise apartment building, or even a 3 story house, but those building codes also restrict you for materials if you're a do it yourselfer. Some people would rather build with their hands and not have to pay someone else. Freedom.
