Rent the above mentioned tool, or a light, electric Makita or Milwaukee jackhammer. There are manual tools that are a digging bar tip imbedded in a large slide hammer sleeve that work far better than the one piece bars.

Can I ask why you need barb wire ?

For general fencing. I might go with the standard pig fencing but it a lot more. Really undecided yet.

If for pigs, run the barbed wire along the bottom, or they can (and will) lift the edge of the fence to squeeze under.
Barbed wire along the top seems to be for keeping people out.

I watched my neighbor work with an O'o bar and it took him about a full day to pound out three 2' X2' holes. He's about 6''2" and maybe 270. Do yourself a favor, get the jackhammer or demo drill. As stated, Home Depot has them for about $30.

Well I think the Jack hammer goes for like 90 a day + bits + Genny if you don't have for like 100 / Day IIRC. I will be renting for a day to explore setting the corner posts and then for a week to set the middle posts after I know what I am in for. Sigh.....

If you are installing the T-posts, just drill a 1 3/8" or 1 1/2" dia. hole and pound the post in. No need for concrete. If you are running into rock that you can't dig out, there's your foundation. Not that I have done it yet but I intend to build two concrete gate posts by drilling 3/4" holes into the pahoehoe (that stopped me when I first set out to DIG a hole for an Ohia post) and set 1/2" rebar down into the rock with either epoxy or anchor cement, then cast a post around the rebar. If you can secure the rebar into the underlying rock your job is pretty much done. Point being drilling a handful of tiny little holes with a tool designed specifically for the task is way easier than breaking rock like you were on a chain gang.

Thanks MarkP! I will certainly keep that in mind. I haven't managed to talk the wifey into the fence yet. :-)

microage, I went looking for your lot yesterday and was not sure which one it was. There is a lot of building going on in there. I feared that I was ruining my minivan- and so decided to give up the search.
