Sunday, 1145 am, dark green military style helicopter sweeping over lower hpp. Two wings on tail, two pieces of surveillance equipment? on right side. Red light coming from back of the upper device.
Very interesting. I have never seen a green harvest heli look like this before. The two pieces of equipment mounted seem a little overkill when they are flying so low that pictures rattled on my walls.
Made several circles over a few areas and then just flew out towards hawaiian beaches.
As I am typing, he is back. Very loud!

USGS has been waiting for weather to clear to get a good look at the flow and hopefully re adjust cameras. Perhaps?

Nope, further research since reveals not them today. Could be nothing more than a " maintenance" flight by the mechanic, or worse... Keep binocs ready to help identify, look at tail structure behind cockpit area, Matt black, or dark OD green printing will decide who. FAA numbers or inventory number will be on tail fin.

uh 72. Thats the one. Thanks pahoated. I saw zero numbers on this one anywhere. No emblems. He just comes and goes. Third time we have seen it now. Just what we need, a new type of helicopter searching for plants. They already use at least 3 others............ Must be nice to have that much money to blow invading our privacy looking for a plant. Meanwhile in Colorado..........

It has to have an ID number, so if it goes down they know who it was. Look very closely at pic. On back part of fuselage ( the skinny part) you will faintly see the ID number just ahead of the tail assembly, then a grab bar, then what branch of service. You will need the number to file a complaint if you do. "Low" is a relative term. Just because the pilot is rattling the windows doesn't mean it's low. The pilot is just cutting a lot of air to move forward from either a headwind, or haulin' kulo. Pilot etiquette, or base PR "recommends" follow 1500 ft ceiling level over residential and National Parks when in transit. Contour flying below that in a residential area is a no no. 1500 ft is deceiving from the ground, but if you can count rivets on a panel, call it in with the ID number if that's your thing.

Does anyone remember the guy in Fern Acres who would lay out metal roof in his property to spell out expletives in the hope of keeping choppers away?

I spent 20 yrs as a USMC helicopter crew-member and anytime we had an opportunity to over-fly our neighborhood or fishing grounds (counted as training time) we made a few passes. Chances are the crew (Local to the neighborhood) or someone on the crew wanted to get a look-see of their grounds or neighborhood. Not trying to stir the pot but, just first-hand knowledge.

Perhaps related (as to helicopters in our area), otherwise, just FYI:
Hawaii Volcanoes National Park will have several aerial operations in the next month. On Monday and May 12 and May 26, park officials will use aircraft between 8 a.m. and noon to transport fencing material from the summit of Kilauea to an area near the top of Mauna Loa Road.
On Tuesday, there will be a morning flight to Kahuku for wildlife management. May 16, park officials will fly camp supplies and equipment from end of Chain of Craters Road to the Apua Point, Keauhou, and Halape campsites for annual monitoring of hawksbill turtle nesting season.
The park regrets any noise impact to residents and park visitors. Dates and times are subject to change based on aircraft availability and weather. -
