Opinions about subdivision.

Hey Oneself! Are you here yet?

The mosquitoes here are more anklebiters than state birds...of course I would never want to minimize their impact on the native birds, which have taken a huge population dive due to mosquito borne diseases, but for most northerners, they are much more lightweight than the blood suckers we were accustomed to (hey, these guys do not need to tough out brutal winters!

It is no where near the dark cloudy on cloudy days, rarely are the clouds solid for a day, they break up & reform on their climb up the mountains.. and the sun is higher (nearly overhead these days...just 10 days from the direct overhead "Lahaina Noon")

Rain here is something to live with, things do not stop because of rain, and it is rare to have a thunderstorm, so kids are accustomed to playing out in the rain... You do get used to wearing wash'n'wear type clothes...and shoes that can stomp around in puddles & slipped off easily at the door. Most rain is fairly straight down, so an umbrella works well (coming from a very windy area, this was an adjustment...you can actually stay dry here with an umbrella!)

Gotta agree with Carey about the mosquitos here. Sure, there are lots of them, but they are wimpy. I grew up in Montana and in the summer time, there were times when you couldn't last more than 5 minutes outside. They were so bad and their bites were huge and itched for days. So yes, there are mosquitos here and I get bit, but they don't itch or swell up like mainland mosquitos.

I am a big fan of Volcano and spend as much time there as possible. That said, I have seen temps in the lower 50's and pouring down rain in August and sunnny days with temps in the high 70's in December and January. But there is vog, and long drive to anything such as the supermarket, hospital, etc. But overall the temps are cool with a lot peace and quiet - not to mention the Nat'l park in the backyard to while away the days and nights.

Most of the subdivisions in Puna have many good qualities about them, Yet a few have Little to be desired. The ones at the top of my list in Puna, 1- Ag lots just above Keaau is really nice for its conveniences to and from hilo, School is close with nice new facilities. The lots are 1 acre, the roads are paved, and you have county water with all amenities. 2- Would be the gated community in Kapoho for its weather, security, with ocean accesses cant be beat in Puna. 3, 4, and 5 could go in any order with them being Leilani, Volcano, and Eden rock.
The top 3 subdivisions I would avoid for various reasons would be 1- Blacksands 2- Nanawale 3- Ainaloa.

A few other subdivisions that are intriguing are Seaview, Wa'wa, and now many are starting to buy above the Pahoa school and Transfer station just not sure what the area is known as now without all the cane. The rainy seasons can make a difference of opinions quickly too. JMO here though. P.S. Living in Most of Puna beats living in most of the world..

The area above Pahoa is known as Kaohe, mostly 5 acres or more. Has Eden Roc come up so far in the last few years? The last time I was up there it was full of junk cars, shacks and some scary looking people.

Drove the loops of Eden Roc and Fern Acres. Both are paved and Fern Acres has more upscale homes but surprised no litter, dead cars few. Rains more than lower elevations. 6 miles to back of each subdivision from the highway so a bit remote when compared to OLE, HPP etc. Roads in better shape than HA or OLE.
