Anything Acres
#51
Thank you very much. It looks like we maybe could support a couple of lambs. Most of this ½ acre is now a mix of grasses, orchids and ferns. I have attempted to landscape around existing plants and most has been hand cleared. this now all requires weed-whacking as the ground is to uneven for a mower. For such a small space I seem to produce endless amounts of grass cuttings, culled bamboo orchids and uluhe. Although cut grass makes good compost the other two are simply overwhelming. Presumably sheep would eat the grass but could I supplement it with orchids? Can you really just have a couple of baa baa lambs just roaming about the place? For the life of me I can't see why not. they would be happy sheep I think. We are about to put a fence around this bit. Not a high fence mind you, just something to keep the dogs in. Doesn't sound like that will work with a goat. When we get the fence we can convert the dog-house into a something-else house. It is pretty much a ready made coop. 10 x 10 with a hand built floor to ceiling wooden shelving Unit. There is a fenced 10 x 10 run in front of the dog-house. The down side us that it is right next door to my cabin. At the moment it is wafts of ginger or gardenia that catch my nose. I am given to understand that rooster noise is somewhat controllable though.

yes sheep fencing is easy, and if you get them as babies they wont want to run off. the problem in the acres is not keeping sheep in, it is keeping dogs out. many many friends have lost their animals to packs of roaming dogs. i do have 2 strands of barbed wire along the bottom of my fense, so far great luck. hair sheep (not wool sheep) should eat what you have there. sheep house is easy, they dont mind the rain at all (goats hate the rain or at least mine do)

All hoover animals should have a covered dry area because they can get roof rot. Doesn't have to be a super pro stable just someplace to dry the hooves off.

There is a FB group - Acre Heads - created in response to the blatant censorship on google group and the other FB acres page which had three members when I discovered it - the current president, vice-president, and treasurer. Yes there are politics. There are also discussions of agriculture, pisiculture, the roads (oh no! not the roads) that might be of interest to residents of the Acres. Anonymous posting is discouraged. I read the stuff posted here under screen names with many grains of salt - in short it is mostly bull. The excuse about the NSA is also bull. If you have a cell phone - you are in the system. If you have an address - you are in the system. Meanwhile, if you are interested - the HARC meets the last thursday of every month - 6 pm - guests are welcome (LQuade and others will attest). 966 9892 is the office number - monday, tuesday, and thursday from 9 am until 2 pm. Glenda will be happy to chat, pass the #'s for your road rep, and so on. All of the crap you may have read here about false names, non-this, and non- that - posted by nameless folks - they are nothing but crap. That whole thread about people patching 1 road with concrete and other people coming and busting up the patches - all crap. Yamada cancelled the asphalt order for today - it will be friday (weather permitting) and we would love volunteers to help shovel or tamp or????? The HARC has term limits - unlike our pals over at HACA - and at least one or two posts need to be filled. If you become tired of typing and want to actually take part - c'mon down. Want to know the FACTS? Do some research - Aloha all, thanks John, Yay Leo

Wow, good thing someone showed up to tell us the difference between crap and bull because I couldn't figure it out for myself.

Meanwhile, if you continue to post anonymously you have zero credibility. Like it or not, funny or not, you are trolls and me, I am done here - yay Leo. Aloha

Well thank you Geoff. I couldn't find that site last time I tried but will try again. Yes we all do need to get more involved including my own family. I do intend to get more involved with HACA but English plain speaking and politics are not a good mix Smile so I don't know how well that will end up Smile I also intend on volunteering my men, especially the young one, to the 'road gang' next time they need hands. And yes, humor is always good, even disrespectful politically incorrect humor is good (but needs to be especially funny)? Thank you for posting under your own name. My aloha to you.
